I meant 1978.
Fuck, what's in a year or two, let's say 1976.

You know, somehow Prince will never be known as an amazing poet. LoL He might worship Joni Mitchell, but the bug never caught. Still, Mr Nelson's lyrics are all about the music. They have to fit, even if it has him singing he is a dog and you are a cat. You have GOT to be joking!!!!!

people define color differently when wasn't Prince Black? even so-called "white" albums like ATWIAD & Parade are full of funky moments and don't forget... Prince's roots are in MPLS how black is that? we're all mostly a product of our influences no need to correct the fools who'd say such things the music has always spoken for itself and if we're gonna be proud of anything let it be because of what we do and not because of our physical hue [Edited 8/13/05 14:04pm] Oh, SNAP! You have GOT to be joking!!!!! He has written lots of lyrics that appeal to me, but lyrics like "Lalala hehehee, I want u, u want me" just do not go down well with people that are used to the consistent high quality lyrics of peeps like Joni Mitchell.

He used those lyrics on a dare from Sheena Easton who didn't think he could do a song with those words. The fact that he made a great song out of that shows his lyrical genius.

GangstaFam said: Anxiety said: but it was still very colorful and fun, and most of it was considered to be too "out there" even for TIM friggin' BURTON to put in the movie. i can see how some folks would see it as selling out, since prince is making music to conform to a WB franchise, but i kinda see it as a challenge, as he'd never really written a whole album of music for someone else's project before this, and the idea of the soundtrack being a kind of "narrative", with songs sung by characters from the film (and "gemini", of course), was a pretty inventive touch as well, i think.
no, it's not intended to be the lofty personal message that was "lovesexy" or the musical statement that was "sign 'o' the times", but it wasn't meant to be. though i do think that there's still plenty in the batman album that addresses the whole "dual identity" gemini issue that he'd been toying around with for years, so there's that to think about, too. What he said. I love the Batman album. Batman! The album can definitely be considered a sell-out moment, but selling out doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing if the artist's heart goes into it as well as the desire for money. Prince clearly had fun working on the soundtrack, and that can be just as important as some of the grand proclamations and statements that appear on other albums he's done. But Arms of Orion's still crap. Dude should've reconsidered that one. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

why is it considered selling out when you market your name and profit from it? i mean, you are in the "industry", you deserve the financial gain associated with your name IMO.

Because in a perfect world art is made for art's sake and not for money. Unfortunately, given the way the industry works, in order to be a commercial success an artist has to pimp their name and image and make a fair chunk of money off of it to get any attention. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

"Sell-out" is the dumbust fucking term ever. It was made up by someone who never received an opportunity to capitalize on any level of success. If selling out makes you millions of dollars. PLEASE...give me the chance to sell-out. Im broke as hell. (Insert something clever here)

He sold out with Prince self titled. He then did it again with 1999 and Purple Rain.
