It's actually the traditional analog way of doing things that messes up the sound rather. It's just that many people seem to prefer that sound. And Musicology would have sounded exactly the same had it been laid down on tape only regardless of utilizing computers at any recording stage. Prince has always used quality tape you know, you wouldn't hear the difference. The thing is mastering plants these days have to tendency, and the nexessary equipment, to boost the high frequencies, drop the low ones, scoop the mids - and that's pretty much the modern sound for you.
