OMG, I remember Conways and the one on 34th! Is that store still there? Anyways, I remember hearing the song on the radio but I didn't realize it was Prince till I got SOTT later that summer. I didn't love it but I didn't hate it. Now I love it. It's still a timely song for where we are now. More proof why Prince is the master of his game.

i guess its still there i live in copenhagen denmark now...

a friend of mine lives there...keeps trying to get us to come visit.

I am in Texas..big difference! LOL

Surely, yeah i remember as clear as day when i first heard this cut. It was at my cousin "Kristan's" house in livingston just outside edinburgh. She is pretty heavy into prince and it was her in fact at an early age that got me into him, ..She blasted a few classics to me in her room, amongst those were a varied selection from Ministry, led zeppelin and when she eventually played SOTT i nearly shot my load, utter classic.

She soon after made me a compilation tape of Prince cuts and i havent looked back. dove

First time I heard Batdance, while we're on the subject of first times, it was a "pick it or kick it" on the local radio. The song got kicked and the DJ made fun of it but damn it if a week later they weren't playing it a million times a day. First time I heard Kiss, it was up against Rock Me Amadeus and damn it if the late Falco didn't kick Prince's ass.

Ahh, memories...
All good things they say never last...

Don't know why, but when the keyboard comes in playing that chord, while Prince sings "Is it sinning, no?", the bleakness of the song really strikes. When I first heard the track (sorry, guys, I'm only eighteen, so I was one year old when it first came out) and I heard this part, with that chord from the keys, it just blew my mind.

Something about that chord: implied submediant (bass playing the tonic). I dunno, that minor sixth just kills me; it almost drives me to tears, that one chord.

I remember hearing it on the radio driving somewhere. I pulled the car over to listen to it and went to the record store to go buy it(that moment). Then I remember being turned off by the cover until I found out later it was Cat.

I don't exactly remember the very first time I heard it, but I do remember it being unlike anything I've heard before. It's a great song in a sort of haunting, errie way...as if these signs are something we can't escape....
Damn this kooky love affair....

The actual lyric is "It's silly, no? When a rocket ship explodes and everybody still wants to fly."

Thanks for clearing that up...I used to sing "The city knows when the rocket ship explodes..." I guess I could have googled the words, but I never thought to do so.

Snap

I was 16 years old, at home listening to the radio when it came on... "the new song by Prince" they said... the single hadn't been released yet... I was so excited... shaking... waiting... and then it started... it was so different... so serious... so haunting. Prince had never really quite done a song like that before... not since "Annie Christian" really. I loved the funky synth effect on the percussion with a very simple bass line... and the way he did the vocals. Very cool! I always loved it when Prince surprised us with something different.

It is! Ominous and it builds the bridge up nicely. What an amazing track and to think it might have just been another song on Dream Factory!
