I really dont think Tony is as bad as you all make him out to be...it seems one day...many years ago...one person hated it and it caught like wildfire.... Its really NOT that bad..he aint the best, but I dont hate his presence.

Mslegs, I have learned over my short time here in the org to pay close attention to your posts as I have found a myriad of purple nuggets of wisdom in your words that consistently represent savy and sound judgement, as well as a depth of experiencial knowledge concerning Prince that is rare even amoungst such funky fam as to be found here. We can funk.

The bassline in the original is too funky, but on Graffiti Bridge it's replaced with a bassline that's way too high.

I was so happy when I saw the tracklisting for Graffiti Bridge and sooooo disapointed when I heard the altered bassline.

but seriously, how can you like this song? he changed it to be this lust-filled horned dog fuck-song when the lyrics completely contradict that..

its as if your singing, "dont worry, be happy" like its a funeral song...but at least that would convey some irony....

the fact is, prince sings that song without any irony thus making him sound like a moron so out of touch with the lyrics it renders the song unlistenable...

I share creamythighs love for the song though perhaps not her level of indignation from the post that was being reponded to. I guess I simply don't hear in his cover what you have so colorfully described, but rather the hurt and angst over what was an inability to inspire Mayte to see him with the same eyes that she used too. I hear the realization of a love lost and I must admit that it touched me as someone who knows a little about the subject.

see, and thats exactly what i dont hear..lyrically thats what i hear..but vocally i hear prince being his usual lustful self...expecially that damn ad-libbed ending about throwing up the legs and what not.....

this is a song about somebody actual realizing they have no chance in the world for connection...ever again....its over..the relationship is done..but prince is talking about "thrusting"?

yup. I agree that all songs with Tony M contributions are
dragged down by the horrible rapping.

mind you, Tony isn't to blame for that imo. well, ok, his
voice is horrible enough, but it was Prince who decided 2
have him on the tracks and who probably wrote most of the
raps anyway.

I don't think the songs would have been better if another
person had done the raps, like say Cat for example. Those
songs are all just so incredibly dated by those raps.

On their own, they strut along nicely enough and would be
cool to listen to unto this very day. But because of them
horrible raps and over-trying to be hip they ended up the
worst bunch of songs out of his career.

Just think how nice the "Diamonds & Pearls" album wouldve
been if it hadn't had any raps at all. Just some nice and
quirky musical solo's where the raps are now.

drool

I don't understand it anyway. "Gett Off" was the coolest
song on the radio that summer and it features little to
none Tony M, apart from those "23 positions blabla" bits
which would have been cooler had Prince done them too.

Anywho, my point is, with a song like "Gett Off" on his
new album, what the hell was he thinking he needed more
rap for to give him more cred or to make him more hip??

The sickness got a little less on the symbol album, but
even there, whenever Tony pops up, the song sinks into
a tar pit trap of sickening disgust and you just have 2
hit the >>skip>> button quickly.
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Hmm....no, I can't agree with you. Prince's cover is not that good. A nice cover of that song is the one that George Michael did. Now that's nice. Prince was cool on that cover, but George Michael trumped him in the end. (Wait, that sounded wrong!)

See, I like the way P does that song. Leave it to him to make a break-up song about sex. It's like he's saying "I know I can't make you love me, but howzabout one more for the road". Classic P attitude.

As for songs he's "fucked up", I agree with all the Tony M mentions. Dumbest move P ever did was bringing that guy into his band.

I also think quite a few songs on Emancipation are drawn out just to make the album into a three hour extravaganza. Does "The Human Body" really need to go on and on and on?

As for "Slave" I think the song sucks in comparison to the superior "Slave 2 The System". He shoulda put that one on the album instead.

Turn down the lights, turn down the bed
Turn down these voices inside my head
Lay down with me, tell me no lies
Just hold me close, don't patronize - don't patronize me

CHORUS: Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

I'll close my eyes, then I won't see
The love you don't feel when you're holding me
Morning will come and I'll do what's right
Just give me till then to give up this fight
And I will give up this fight

CHORUS: Cause I can't make you love me if you don't
You can't make your heart feel something it won't
Here in the dark, in these final hours
I will lay down my heart and I'll feel the power
But you won't, no you won't
'Cause I can't make you love me, if you don't

these are the lyrics...the person who is singing cant convey attitude..they are heartbroken....he aint no pimp..he is a sad and heartbroken soul....

this person is desperate asking for one more night...one more night and its it...and he is begging for his/her lover to show them any emotion, but they know they wont...

the final ad-lib that prince sings is a total contradiction (lyrically) to the entire song..

Oh, I have to mention quite a bit of New Power Soul. The album is a crap-fest, but it COULD have been good.

The title track is half-baked. Needed a little more work.

Mad Sex has potential. Maybe a funky guitar line.

eye Like Funky Music could have been slamming with a good drummer pounding on it. The drums are tepid and week. Imagine this track if Blackwell had played on it.

Remove tripe like "Shoo Be Doo", "When U Love Somebody" and "Push It Up" and you could have had a tight EP.

But that is what makes it a P song, instead of a retread of the Bonnie Raitt version. Now, don't get me wrong, I think the Raitt version is better, and more true to the lyric's nature, but I like that P is putting a seductive spin on it. Almost as if he's trying to seduce her one more time, so he can make her fall in love with him by pleasing her so well. It is a desperate attempt, but P plays it off as another seduction attempt. On that level, I think it works.

Personally, my favorite version of this song is George Michael's. His take is SO pain-filled, and quite effective.

fun lil debate here...

lyrically i cant see it...i just cant....because of this line: "but you wont, you wont"...

thats the line that gives this song its power..IMHO....

kinda like Cher's Believe...lyrically that song would be blahh until she sings, "I dont need you anymore..I dont need you anymore"...It brings a certain vitality and non-desperation to the song that otherwise wouldnt be there...Suprisingly enough Cher hated the song until she herself added those lyrics...she said the song became something entirely different afterwards...

well, same with this song....the author knows its a lost cause..and thats what makes the unrequited request soo heartbreaking.....but prince, prince ignoring the power of "good songwriting" ignores all that.....you cant do that to the lifeline of a song...

The lay out of the Rainbow Children was gagalicious. For example Digital Garden into The Work PT 1 is a nightmare.

The butchered editing on
What do you want me to do? into
The marrying kind into
If I was the man in your life.
I can bash my own head in thank you very much.

Releasing radio friendly music. For example, Rave into the Joy Fantastic beat the snot out of Rave unto the Joy Fantastic. Now, I'm sure Hot with You would have garnered him the attention he sought from radio.

Releasing songs that he's trying to realize a message but it is half baked. Exhibit A - Family Name. Stephen Hawkins banging over the beats. Prince - skip the rest of the track.

That may be so, but if the Revolution managed to keep a respectable distance from the mic, how come the NPG couldnt manage it. What Im saying is if Prince writes a song, Id rather hear him sing it, rather than let one of the NPG come in and butcher it with their own "input". At the end of the day, all these records go on his discography, no one elses, he has control over the output, and he fucked up many songs on those NPG records letting people have too much mic time.

Yeah. It IS better live, but I mainly like the way he segued it into "Jam of the Year". Perhaps its one of those songs, like ILFM, that could be better with some more work on it, but I just don't care for it.

Oh, but you have to keep in mind the era. Prince didn't say he didn't like rappers, just ones that weren't "dead on it". At the time, there were a few who were talking shit and dogging P, and this song was his tongue-in-cheek answer to them.
