Prince songs that you think he "messed Up"

What are some Prince songs that you thought he had a great song going and either

in the middle or at the end you hear him go in a totally different direction

and you're like WHY THE HELL DID HE DO THAT? I know for me its extra loveable

I consider it a B+ unreleased track almost on par with Moonbeam levels or

Extra Loveable until the end when he starts all that rape you talk and

all the weird instrumentation at the end. Coulda been an A+.

I know we all have them. What R' yours?

the horrible pseudo-rap/reggae in "the sun, the moon, the stars"

the track is one of my faves, but the rap reggae has got to go.

The rap stuff wasn't necessary.
I like the musical movements in the background when the rapping is going on, but just wish something more interesting was happenning vocally. shrug

Rave Un2 The Joy Fantastic. The song kills on the Small Club boot and the snippets were great in Batdance, but the studio version is just unlistenable.

I just posted something simular on another thread. Personally, I wouldn't say "unlistenable" but I would say incomplete. For me, it's a little too repititious and could have used a frenzied guitar solo or maybe addition vocals. It's a great song but the studio version simply can't compete with the live versions.

Well the song didn't stink or anything but he kinda messed up the sample or housequake on Girl#6. When the sample says "Damn!" you hear the drumbeat.

I don't think anyone knows what the hell I'm talking about..I need a life.

The Continental, with that ridiculous little interlude at the end when the song should be OVER.

Sun, Moon, and Stars falls apart with the embarassing reggae like rap.

My Name is Prince goes from enjoyable fun to crap with the horribly long Tony rap.

Live 4 Love is also a great song til the unnecessary Tony rap.

The Max would've been so much better if the lyrics in between those "The Max" parts in the chorus sang by Prince were spoken all sexy by Prince instead of Tony.

Heh, see a pattern here?

Everlasting Now goes on too long, and then the Vader voice kicks in! Way to ruin a fun sounding song, Princey!

The Most Beautiful Girl, LP version is overproduced and sounds too loud and busy. The single edit got it right. It's a shame the inferior version is on TGE.

The "God" voice is totally unnecessary at the end of Temptation and makes everything corny and unintentionally hilarious.

That's all I can think of right now.

Agreed. Although, I do like it the way it is, can't help but feel the rapping is superfluous. confused

Co-sign. I hate the "booty boom" part. I think that phrase is tacky and it dates the song a bit as well, imo.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

Absolutely anything that included Tony M. It makes me cringe even thinking about how he butchered some songs back in the 90s. Of them all, I would select My Name is Prince and Willing and Able as two songs that went downhill quickly after the mic was passed to Tony M. Tony rapping over the organ at the end of Willing and Able is like giving a child crayons and a Picasso. The outcome is..blaahhh!

I don't think there should've been a second version of "Empty Room". The 1st was perfect. Also, I've never been enamoured of the (most commonly circulating) studio version of "Days of Wild". That track flat-lines badly. It always worked better as a live track.

On another Small Club related issue I love the version of Still Would Stand All Time on there but have no fondness for the released version at all.

I especially like the bit where he goes through the days of the week and how the sex is on each day!!

'3 Chains o' Gold'

1st verse... so far, so good (last sentance leave a bit to be desired however)

But then a crappy guitar line kicks in with a lame-O keyboard part that just grates. It then settles down again, into this really sublime section with a stunningly beautiful melody, and a great vocal from our boy, then it all kicks off with a load more symbollocks again. Parts of it have the makings of a truly great Prince song, but it's such a mish-mash of unrealised ideas it just doesn't feel like anything remotely like a whole.

Its central dynamic is so intent on being some big operatic statement (like it's sister song 'Strays of The World') that it collapses in on itself like a souffle in an oven, leaving a feeling of frustration behind. If he hadn't tried so hard, rather than forcing all these different parts together, it may have worked. In this giant mess of a song lies at least two decent songs - one of them a gem.

I am with you on most of these, but My Name is Prince/Live 4 Love are the only two songs where Tony M doesn't become a cancer to the song.

The live version of Live 4 Love on the Diamonds & Pearls VHS/DVD IS butchered by Tony M's rap...he sounds like he is about to have an asthma attack
