Of course!!!!! I mean the man loves, eats, sleeps, breathes MUSIC. In fact he is music.

I think he is a musical genius. Although there is many musical genius's I don't think he is the only one.

2. there are way too many artists for whom the argument can be made just as easily.

whether he's the greatest popular music artist of the last 25 years is, I think, the more reasonable (and defensible) argument.

In my opinion YES, mainly because he does so many things great. He may not be the greatest at all things, but when you put everything together he still rocks.

He's a very talented songwriter, but I don't think we can compare him to the classical composers of the past, and he's a very talented as a multi-instrumentalist, but start comparing his individual talents to others, and he might come up short (no pun intended). But as an all-around modern musical marvel, yeah, he's one of the greatest, and may be the greatest.

As for the question, I'm probably more partial to painters so my nod would go to Picasso. As for musicians I couldn't in all honesty say Prince is better than everybody but I can say he's still one of my favorites. At times my answer would have been Jimi or Stevie. More recently I will have expanded it to Ani Difranco, Dylan, and Sly. Can't forget Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield and Charles Mingus. These are just the ones I like the most. Then there's guys like Bowie and Springsteen that I admire from a distance and couldn't/wouldn't argue against.

Well, if we're talkin' single solo artist, well then I guess that bumps him up to #3.

I don't think he's the greatest artist of all time but he's my favorite of all time.

muscician / multi instrumentalist, songwriter, singer,producer,dancer,

Also i think in some cases its difficult to know how much things are hyped eg...
with regards to the multi instrumentalist thing, this is usually very hyped when its asked or talked about how many instruments Prince plays , typical answers are ...countless, or i think ive even heard once 47 or something. But seriously how many instruments would Prince be very fluent with, I dont think it would be countless... he can probably work out a series of notes on many instruments and make them sound musical but thats different to being fluent on a given instrument.
I would imagine his main abilities would be with "Guitar" would be his main instrument... followed by "Bass & Piano" he would have some degree of ability on
drums, besides these he may blow some sax etc but i doubt he would be very fluent on several other instruments, eg ...violin, cello, etc

As a muscian, singer songwriter and song and danceman i would say he probably comes into the top 10 - 15, over the last century.

Being COURAGEOUS is one of the reasons why I ADORE him.....

If we are honest, we would either say it is Duke Ellington or Ray Charles, but Prince is easily in the top 5. If Prince concentrated on making more peerless music, he could one day be number one.
