Well, it depends on what criteria you are using: Sales? Concerts? Popularity? Quantity? Quality?
I will say this - and this word hasn't been dropped in this thread yet - Prince is the most PROLIFIC ARTIST OF ALL TIME when you take into consideration his albums and the fast output of his albums, his vault(s), his music for other groups/artists...NO ONE had that kind of feverish-genius output BUT Prince. So Prince may not be the Greatest Artist of All Time but he sure is The Most Prolific Artist of All Time. "But what of black women? . . . I've got about 3 Coltrane cds but I have to admit I'm not too familiar with his work. Now Bird and Louis I know a bit about and I'd put them and Duke in this conversation to be sure. All of these guys (and gals) are so good you can't say who's better so I'm not saying they're better than Prince. Once you've mastered what you do it's all a matter of personal opinion as to who's the greatest. I could go back to an old point I made, which is that artists get better with time if for no other reason that they have the shoulders of those that came before them to stand on. To some extent this is true, but at the basic levels great music is always great music. This is a question with a multitude of correct answers. |
