Prince and his fans

I'm about to sound just like a damn newbie but whatever.

It sorta sucks that Prince, who has a very connected fanbase, doesn't really speak directly to his fans.

I was over at okayplayer and many of the okayplayer artist log on and respond to the message boards. Erykah Badu just posted over there about all the crap she's been getting about the F*&* the police commentary she's been doing at the sugar water festival.

I would be nice for him to just speak directly and not through some coded messages...i'm too old for that shit.

ok..i'm done being weird. wink

the way i see it, by the way some of the fanbase acts it's a good thing he doesn't speak to us directly.

You got that right. Some people here have nothing positive to say about him, his music, his wife, etc, etc. Some days this isn't really a Prince fan site, it's more of a Prince slam sight.

not just because of that, but mostly because of the nuttier/overly devoted fans and their inability to speak without rose-colored microphones. i'm not just lookin at the fans on here, but the entire prince fanbase as a whole. there are a lotta level-headed folks within our ranks, but still...

if he were to speak to us directly for like one day, via a live chat over at npgmc or what-not, it would be totally just lost...muthafuckas yellin at 'im to either put out something akin to purple rain III and to stop being a jehovah's witness because it cramps their style, then you'd have the cacophony of fans like "omgiloveuiloveuidon'tlistentoanyoneelsebutyouomglol", then you'd have the oversexed populace basically throwing themselves and their cyber-pannies at 'im...amongst all this, folks would be trying to give their props, pounds and kudos.

...like i said, it's better if he didn't speak to us directly because it'd end up just being total hell.

I'm not sure women would want to hear Prince talk more clearly about his JW beliefs and "theocratic order". God - Man - Woman .... in that order.

i was thinking the same thing when i first read your post
if you've ever been in a chat with Prince and lots of fans
it gets crazy -- and the fans trip all over themselves, so to speak
it's much better when it's one-on-one (at his choosing)
yeah, it'd be cool if he wrote a few lines here and there to us
but if it's open for fan feedback, comment or reply... eek oh no

Whoa....I have never ever heard "theocratic order" defined like that and it's obvious listening to the song or other comments Prince has made about knowing their place etc. that he doesn't either.

You got that right!

Since I've been online, I've discovered that not all but the vast and vocal majority of his fanbase are the biggest bunch of fickle people, I've ever had the displeasure of knowing existed!

Before the internet, I LOVED being a Prince fan, even when the rest of the world thought he was bizarre, I was a big fan and PROUD of it! When I came across another fan, we bonded almost instantly because we knew we understood him. It was like having a big juicy secret, everybody else was clueless about.

Now and not because of him, but the fact that I've seen what the rest of the fanbase is like, I'm almost too damn ashamed to admit I'm a fan!

That "special" feeling I used to get is loooong gone. I don't go over to the NPGMC, unless someone over here posts that there's something worth going for, because frankly, the "fans" over there frighten me. If Prince hosted a chat over there, "Chaos and Disorder" would be understatments! shake

I hang out around here because I can find tidbits of good info, sometimes witty conversations, some pretty good fights, and hell I can cuss! biggrin But I damn sure wouldn't want to see Prince hosting a chat over here, it would be ridiculous, every other statment would be, "When are you gonna open the fucking vault, man!" Or "When's the Revolution getting back together?" Puhleez disbelief

I don't post much at Housequake, just go there for the videos, but I'm pretty sure it couldn't happen there either, because I'm sure the guilty parties from the above two paragraphs wouldn't have any problem taking the show on the road!

He did do a online chat at NPGMC a few years ago and the chat crashed because so many people were trying to get in and I think the pre-show meeting with the fans was a why to get to meet people. Some fans are so crazy I don't think he would like doing chats all the time.

i understand what you're saying, since you're an old-schooler and all...me, i still feel proud to be a prince fan regardless of the nuttiness some folks exhibit online. i don't look at my fandom/geekdom strictly online because i know so many folks offline and face-to-face. the feelings of knowing that you're in on the 'secret' that is prince is still there, the way i see it. always will be, because there'll always be those you meet while you're out and about who won't "get it" the way you do, and when you do meet another person who gets it? it's awesome.

swanny

But everytime Prince opens his gob he fucks a load of people off. Who wants to hear bollocks like 'i'm a slave', 'stauros', 'Larry Graham is a God' and 'I'm no.1 at the bank'

He is best with his trap shut. Fargnoli knew this and that is why he kept it that way. Of course since 1988 it has all gone downhill.

P don´t speak 2 his fans, cos the music comes first and is all that matters. He´s more interesting and that´s why there´s so lot gossip and speculation about him. Remember MJ, how he once was the most magical man - because he didn´t give any interviews. And now nearly everything is said about him and nobody cares what he´s doing now.

Yeah, great points there.

Also to add, I don't think, as fans, we need to have a relationship with the artist.

I have a relationship with the music, and that's very special to me, and personal, but I don't for a minute consider my relationship with the music to be a relationship with the artist, even if he does put his heart and soul into it.

Do we need to have chats with him, to know him inside out? I don't think so.

Prince has reached out to fans though, he's done webchats, what about the celebrations? That's pretty fucking cool, I mean, I don't we'll ever see those again, and I'm definately sad that missed out on them, once in a lifetime experience there.

But ultimately, our relationship is with the music, not the man behind it.
