Best Band

Just listened to the Purple Finale and I am a firm believer that the Revolution is the best band that Prince has ever had. I know that a lot you like the most recent band, but you need to check out some of the old Revolution concerts.

All of P's bands are good. U have to be good on your instrument if you're going to play with P. But my 2 fave lineups are 80-81 (Dirty Mind; with Andre still there) and 81- 83. Controversy and 1999 lineups with BrownMark and Dez.

SOTT/Lovesexy band is my favorite. Sheilas drumming and stage presence, Eric and Atlanta Bliss on horns worship need I go on?

After that era I loved the ONA band they were so loose and jazz orientated there was a sense that they were well rehearsed but could also do anything off the cuff. Prince could call anyone to do a solo and whoever it was did the biz!! headbang
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

Was The Revolution that great of a group? What are you going by?? It cant be by the albums, because that was all prince or also keyboards/sampler drums.

So when did you hear them that many times to say yes they were the best??

I think THIS Band of NPG is the best.

The only part I do not like is Rev Scott, he has gotten lazy/sloppy in his playing he just does enough now, before he would try & give extra. Also This NPG needs Backup singers! Right now Candy & Ronda basically are off key and suck.

How to Fix?

Bring Back Wendy! cool She can Play Guitar & Sign Backup.

Kill 2 Birds with 1 Stone.

biggrin

Whether they r the best or not I'll always favor The Revolution. 2 me they were an entity. I also like the SOTT/ Lovesexy group but not like The Revolution. 2 bad they couldn't work things out, they were legendary in my mind.

I have 2 give a nod 2 the current group though. I saw Prince at Club Black right after the R&R HoF and they were on point... but then again they played a lot of older stuff wink . D.M.S.R. gave me the chills!

I agree.... This his present band is hands down the best in terms of musical skill... I think people pick the Revolution because they are the most famous and was with him when his fame shot up, but compare the MUSICAL ABILITIES of each... Bobby Z. was one of the the suckiest drummers I can think of and can't hold Blackwell's broken sticks... Though she's good, Lisa has never done keyboard solos like Renato. Fink was better than Lisa, but still not up to Renato's jazz improve. Brown and Rhonda to me are a tie. Eric leeds is good, but no where near Maceo's skills.Wendy was his best guitar. Now he has Candy on tenor and Greg on trombone which adds even more directions and abilities The Rev didn't even have.

I agree.I saw Prince in concert 3 times before Purple Rain.Dez,Dre,and Prince had this on stage chemistry. They were ferocious.Prince and Dez had this "Mick and Keith"vibe. If you don't know what I mean, check out SNL performance of "Party Up".

That's exactly right! Dez and Prince were very much Keith and Mick. It was cooler I felt, cuz they were black cats giving it up as opposed to Steven Tyler and Joe Perry.

The SOTT/Lovesexy band was his best by a mile IMHO. Sheila stated that in the Omnibus documentary and I have to agree with her. That band was ridiculous, Sheila E., Fink, Levi, Miko, Eric, Atlanta, and Boni Boyer. Lord, they were like an all star team and Prince knew it. They are one of the few bands that could take a live recording and KILL the original. The Revolution really didn't have that power because their live shows never truly disentegrated the original recordings. SOTT/Lovesexy was also the most versatile; easily playing rock, funk, r&b, soul and jazz. Their cover of Charlie Parker's Now's The Time during the SOTT's tour is astonishing. Furthermore, they are featured on Prince's best aftershows, Small Club is still one of the most impressive I've heard. I've heard/seen shows with the Revolution and they were good too, but they didn't get really good until Prince started incorporating members from Sheila's band. The Band with Andre, Dez, Lisa, Fink and Bobby Z. was damn good too and it's my 2nd favorite. I have some of their live performances and they were RAW and really knew how to rock out. The Revolution is third for me after those bands. They were good musicians, but they benefited greatly from being the most recognizable because they were in PR.

There's just something about the P, Dez, Andre, Fink, and Lisa lineup that does it for me. Dez is my favorite P guitar player and Andre is my fav P bassist. If you think about it, they were such strong players/personalities/showmen that they wound up fronting their own groups. Out of all of P's bandmates, I think Dez had the truest rock vibe. I always forget to add him to our "famous black guitar players" list...

Like BG says, they all have to be on point to play with Prince.

It depends on the style of music he is playing. The most recent band had 2 b the most versitle. They played jazzy, funk and rock wonderfully. TGE era band was also excellent, but only on the hard stuff. There is no way that band could have played many of the songs on TRC or ONA Live.

As for The Revolution, I think they were great musicians, but the arrangements at the time were not as good as the most recent arrangements.

Well there are different ways of comparing bands , you focus on individuals skills here but...i think the revolution had a certain kind of energy and chemistry that just really worked well. I also agree the sott band and the line up that did Diamonds & Pearls were also the bomb.
