Prince-most famous black guitarist? There aren't many known black guitarists. I would say black guitarists have it easier than white rappers.
In the early daze of Mtv Rick James commented saying he wouldn't watch Mtv il there were black rock artists on it. Mtv simply responded, there aren't many black musicians in rock. Right off hand I can name Jimmy Hendrix,Bootsey Collins, and of course Prince. Hendrix is tuff competition. I guess I should say Prince is the most popular black guitarists alive today. It's so ironic considering rock came from black musicians. Name some and tell me who you think the leading forces are in black rock. Working up a purple sweat.

none of these cats are as famous as P. but they're important in black rock, which is the Snuffleuppagus of the industry. its friends say (and rightfully so) that it exists. everyone else will see it when they believe it. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Agreed. Lenny is my boy and all but there is no way that he can come close to Jimmi's level of playing. [Edited 7/11/05 17:57pm]

While BB King plays a guitar he's more Blues. I mean rock.
One reason black rock hasn't taken off there's virtually no support from the black audience. Well atleast down here in Texas. I was outside a Lenny Kravits concert, I saw plenty of white,a couple other races, but no blacks.Lenny is a long time big force in black rock history. If he can't draw any then it will never become mainstream. [Edited 7/11/05 19:37pm] Working up a purple sweat.

Let's see...'ya got Eric Gales, the cat that plays in Sammy Hagar's band (he used to play with the Bus Boys and he had a black rock group - I forget the name) and two of the baddest rock/metal cats out there, Tony McAlpine and Greg Howe. There's also David Sanctious (used to play keys in the E Street Band - an awesome guitarist, too). I also saw this bad guitarist that played in Annie Lennox's band at Live8.
Add to that our own Blackguitarist and on a much smaller scale, meself Yes, Virginia, black guitarists do exist... My author page: https://www.amazon.com/au...eretttruth

While not well known at all outside jazz circles, Russell Malone is the best living guitar player, and he's black.

Charlie Singleton of Cameo - Can groove just like Prince and shred just like the metal dudes.
Victor Johnson- Plays with Sammy Hagar..Check out Total Eclipse (1992)..He wails all over this CD..Never played like that with The Bus Boys. Ernie Isley - Do I need to say anything on him?..he's the man. Blackbird - He shreds too and plays in the pocket. Ronnie Drayton - (Defunkt/Meshell) - Underrated. Johnny Guitar Watson - As mentioned before, he was great. Spacey T - (Sound Barrier/Fishbone) - Amazing player...Eddie Hazel's friend. Rocky George - (Suicdal Tendicies/Fishbone) Underrated James Blood Ulmer - Underrated. Eddie Martinez - (RUN DMC/Robert Palmer/Blondie) - King of crunch funk. Jimi Hazel - Great player and songwriter. Kendall Stubbs (Fishbone) - he's what Hillel was tp the Chili Peppers/underated. ...man, I could be here all day.

Ahhh shit Handsclap, when should I jump in? Like Fred Sanford says "Don't hold me! Don't hold me!" Man, how many threads have we had about this over in Non Music? I wrote a thread titled "Best Black Rock Guitarists Since Hendrix" , over a year ago that had 200 posts on it. Ya'll need to come over there for this kind of thing. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
