He did not come up with it. "Paisley" is a real word.

I thought it was a color, sort of a light purple. I never found it wierd though, I knew it was a word related to color.

Paisley is a town in Scotland, UK, just outside of Glasgow.

It used to be a major manufacturer of textiles, and is where the 'Paisley' swirly design originates.
