The Rainbow Children is Prince's most tedious album to listen to.

I'm not saying that it's musically his worst, but it's just that as an album, it's the most annoying one in his entire catalogue.

1. The voice-Jesus Christ! An absolute cancer on the album for sure. This alone is tough to stomach.

2. The overly religious, preachy lyrics-Do I even need to say any more? The whole thing is a JW ad, and has this horribly pretentious "We're right and you're evil" tone all throughout in the lyrics.

So basically, I don't care how great the musicianship is or the fact that it's organically produced after all that plastic crap he'd been recording. TRC is still one annoying album to sit through, regardless even of the single gems on it.

I don't get how anyone can call it a classic with all of its tedious flaws.

Even some of the better songs on it like Sensual Everafter and Everlasting Now are tainted by the album's stubbornly stupid touches, like the Vader voice appearing in the actual songs themselves.

I usually end up having to skip a few tracks...or at least fast forward through some parts which is something I always hate to do but I agree it can be tedious....but I still love the record. If it was more straight forward it would have been one of his best albums.

The lyrics...well, I can't say I mind them at all.

TRC is Prince trying to be more than he's capable of.

His best albums were realized when he was content simply being a musical artist.

TRC sounds like him trying to be this spiritual prophet and epic storyteller, and it results in a total mess.

I like the beginning and the some of the middle of the album, but toward the end-- I just have to take it out because he changes the mood and it sounds very incorherent. I do like Last December though, but songs like Family Name and Everlasting Now just mess it up. And please don't ask me about the annoying Wedding Feast. Overall, it's one of his best.

Bullshit. TRC is in the top 5 of the best Prince's albums.

1)It is Prince at his best on guitar, bass, keyboards etc (btw how come nearly a single man can produce such a masterpiece ?!!!).

2)First time Prince comes up with a marvelous organic sound like that.

3)Best drum parts ever on a Prince albums.

4)The way the album is built is pure perfection. The last 30 minutes are unforgetable.

5) Some of the best tunes Prince has ever composed :
Last december, Family Name, 1+1+1 = 3, sensual everafter, Everlasting now.

After all the crapy albums we have had in the 90's like Diamonds and pearls (walk don't walk !!! Jughead !!!!!) or Rave (the first Prince CD I smashed after two listens), Prince focused on real music on TRC. It was an album highly appreciated by music lovers in Europe. It is probbaly less "american" (too sophisticated for some american listeners).

Conclusion : one of the very few only Prince albums I can still listen too without skipping any tune. A masterpiece. Regarding the message : Prince lyrics have almost always been ridiculous so who gives a fuck. It is part of his character.

I agree with everything u said on there. John Blackwell's drumming and Prince's production is top notch. I have never heard such a thick creative and sophisticated sound with such luch musicianship it is as if he were swimming beneath the grooves rather than on top of it, reaching to my soul. Marvelous.

It's nowhere near if you ask me.

I don't care. I already said the great musicianship doesn't stop the album from being a tedious listen. It isn't Prince the musician that bothers me on this album, it's Prince the artist (and his vision for TRC).

2)First time Prince comes up with a marvelous organic sound like that.

Too bad it's wasted on such a schizophrenic mess.

3)Best drum parts ever on a Prince albums.

Now imagine that kind of drumming talent on a more cohesive album.

4)The way the album is built is pure perfection. The last 30 minutes are unforgetable.

The Vader voice is pure perfection? The Vader voice permeating the actual songs themselves is perfection? That silly and unfunny Wedding Feast interlude is perfection? The preachy, JW-only pretension in the lyrics is perfection? Whatever you say...

Yes, it has a great musical sound, but it also has an aggrivating number of flaws.

I give a fuck. And no, Prince's lyrics have not "almost always" been ridiculous. They've been charming, thought provoking, fun, relatable, inspiring, romantic, sexy, sweet and inviting.

Prince's best musical periods always made you feel like he was reaching out to absolutely everyone; defying the boundaries of gender or religious affiliation for the sake of a greater understanding and acceptance of all ppl.

TRC is for JW's only. It's very pretentious.

The theocratic order? Shut up, Prince.

I like the narrator voice, I think it ties the album together, it's never gotten in the way for me, I feel it adds to the experience.

It's there IN the songs, not just inbetween them, maybe this is akin to Prince making Lovesexy 1 track on the original CD release?

The only tracks I sometimes skip are Muse 2 The Pharoah and Mellow, I find Mellow incredibly tedious, M2TP I can tolerate a little more, mainly because I like the melody.

I think the album contains Prince's most interesting music since at least the mid-90s WB releases, if not further back. Songs like Digital Garden and Everywhere, gave me that 'wow' feeling I used to get from Prince's music.

She Loves Me 4 Me is a fantastic pop song, better than anything on Musicology. And the final 3 tracks, Family Name, Everlasting Now, and Last December are a masterstroke.

To go from this, to Musicology was a big dissappointment for me, I await Prince's next move with interest and caution.

PurpleKnight,

You will not make me change my mind. Like many long time Prince fans I know I LOVE TRC.

Prince has been into so many different types of music, his music lovers sometimes appreciate him for different reasons.

I hate Musicology, D&P, Rave... But I love when Prince shows his musicianship because you know what...HE IS A MUSICIAN UH !

If he is a JW, that is his problem. I don't care personally.

I skip tracks on SOTT not on TRC !

Yeah it killed me whenhe came up with this musicology crap after such a great and adventurous album like TRC.

It's one of the Prince albums that gurantees I have to skip tracks.

That bitch is very tedius to listen to.

My big problem is that Darth Vader narrates it, and it doesn't push enough emotional buttons.

It´s funny , I agree with both of you a 100 %. biggrin

I really LOVE Family name, Last December, The Rainbow Children, Digital Garden , She Loves Me For Me, Muse to the Pharaoh and I can´t get enough of Everywhere ( love the uplifting lyrics and the music and John´s drumming).

I can´t , simply CAN`T listen to 1+1+1=3 and the Work and The Everlasting Now, both lyrically and musically, but other than that it´s a true masterpiece, even though the lyrics are sometimes not my cup of tea. But the overall atmosphere is very fascinating.
I see it as the start of a new and exciting phase in Prince´s life.

That being said, I can fully understand and relate to both statements above.
Especially the Jewish names on Family Name are pointless, it´s not like the Jews can be considered "lucky" because they have "beautiful" names like Rosenbloom or Goldstruck or Pearlman.
Much like the African-Americans, they were sort of forced to take these names which were imposed on them when they were living in Poland and Germany, and they even sound ridiculous sometimes, so he should have done more research instead of irritating his Jewish fanbase ( I´m not Jewish, by the way).

That´s just one of many flaws on that album, and I know it´s a weird album, and yes, songs like Digital Garden could even be more beautiful if the lyrics were more accessible, but that was probably not his intention while making this album.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

I can understand why this person feels this way about TRC. I don't agree with everything, but I see his/her point.

I can't stand all the religious shit, but the music speaks for itself. The lyrics are interesting to say the least and his guitar playing is top notch. His voice sounds better than ever. Some songs such as 1+1+1 is so funky I can't help but love it even though I hate the lyrics. TRC is a true concept album. I tell people to pay no attention to his religious/racist mumbo-jumbo and to concentrate on the music. You don't hear great music like that everyday.

I think I finally figured out why I don't like it as much as I want to. It's too laid back for me. The music is good, in fact it's great, but I've recently felt like there was something missing with it and the lack of energy is what it is. Thanks sosgemini for saying that cause I've been trying to figure this out for a while.

That it remains the most CONtroversial record from his body of work is testament 2 that.
