"Billy Jack Bitch" and "Rockhard In A Funky Place" have great brass/horn lines. Only "New Power Soul" (Exodus version) and "Mad Sex" come to mind as being studio tracks with trumpet solos (though I'm sure there are plenty more - I just can't think at the moment). I think "Mia Bocca" has a trumpet solo by Allen Vizuti who is a bit of a technique/classical trumpet guru.
Prince's main trumpet players were Atlanta Bliss, who was with him from 1986-89, and Mike Nelson, who was the trumpeter and arranger for the NPG Hornz (aka the Hornheadz) with Prince on-and-off from 1992-2001. The Small Club (1988 aftershow) boot features a great deal of Atlanta Bliss (Eric Leeds was sick that night). Prince also worked with Miles Davis in the late 80s. Miles performed a short (but not spectacular) solo at the 1987 New Years Eve gig and he overdubed some trumpet on "Sticky Wicked" composed by Prince, released by Chaka Khan. Anyway, Prince really hasn't done that much work with trumpeters. When he has, it's usually as part of a horn section. It would be cool if he hooked up with someone like Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Chuck Finley or Payne (forgot his first name...) - someone really respected among the trumpet community! It sure would be different! Toejam @ Peach & Black Podcast: http://peachandblack.podbean.com

As for me, I just started learning to play trumpet. I already play piano, but wanted to expand a bit. Thanks everyone for your responses. | |
