It might be interesting if Prince used dance music in a way that he used Clare Fischer's orchestration.

There's plenty of organic sounding dance music out there, that still has traditional instruments as well as computers and synthesizers.

Does anyone remember "Loose!" on the Come album. Prince can be said to be one of the fathers of house/techno just with Controversy alone. Loose! alone can show you that Prince can make a hot techno song.

eek eek eek

Prince, the father of Techno ??? lol lol lol

Do you know Jean Michel Jarre ??? I don't think so... biggrin

unreleased 12 minute version of "Computer Blue", with famous "Hallway speech"...

I never really quite understand what people mean when they say 'Techno', and by people, I mean Americans on the net.

Do you mean the sub-genre of Dance music, Techno, or are you referring to all electronic dance music as 'Techno', using it as a catch-all phrase?

Well alot of americans aren't familiar with Techno or electronic music.
When they say electronic music they forget tha there was 80's Synth-Pop&goth and 90's ravea&dance.

As for albums like Contreversey and 1999 they were slightly electronic. Yes there were electronic elemts such as synths but he wasn't a huge pioneer like Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode. The who electro/Electro-Boogie sound was already popular then.
He is revoloustionary and made his own soundand gave a new meaning to sould and R&B music. He even used synths on Dirty Mind and For You.
Afrika Bambata,Roger&Zapp, cybertron and his close friend George Clinton were all using electronic sounds back then.

I will say he is practially the biggest artist to work with synths.

No shit. smile

Prince has had fine techno moments. But he usually mixes it with some other musical style. "Loose!" had a lot of of punk, "New World" was basically funk with the new breed of DA synthesizers. "The Human Body" and "Beautiful" were his most straightforward efforts and to my ears I must say they still sound very good indeed. It's still the Prince sound, crisp light funkiness. thumbs up!

Loose was probrably P-boy's biggest try at electronic music. And I'm an knower of electronic music and I don't think that would have sold to luvers of Techno or Prin'z traditional fanbase.

Leave dance music to the experts - there is nothing wrong with a great remix by somebody who is not overly precious about the material (the fantastic, but of its time house mix of Gett Off is a good example).

As for The Human Body, Loose!, Melt With You and such like - they are interesting failed experiments and to anyone who is a real fan of dance music, just plain embarrassing. Prince....you don't need to do this type of stuff. hah!

Anyone who is "a real fan of dance music" wouldn't call themself a real fan of dance music. Leave the realness to idiots like Prince who like to preach about it.

ive said it before and i'll say it again, prince's true rival in funk right now is Cashmere/Green Velvet..

Prince could really benefit from chasing after that deep deep house funk that Cashmere has been tweaking on....

you know the song?

Artist: Green Velvet
Title: Lala Land

I've been the one to party
Until the end
Looking for the afterparty
to begin

I'm going down, to, La la land
I hope to see you soon in, La la land

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

Now I need to go
Who's gonna give me a ride to the after show
I hope that I have enough change
So I can make my brain rearrange

I'm going down, to, La la land
I hope to see you soon in, La la land

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

Oh, what have I done
What happened to the morning
I passed the time away
High today

I got to find a way to fill the space in time x8

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells

La la land
Is where I need to be
La la land
Is the place that, oh, sets me free

Something 'bout those little pills
Unreal, the thrills, they yield, until
They kill, a million braincells (x alot)

La la land
La la land
La la land
Braincells
Oh
Has anyone seen my brain today, ey
Can anyone pay my rent today, ey

So, have we finally determined who knows what techno music is? Or who is the biggest fan of said "Techno" music? confuse

Maybe I should have posed the question different:

FROM YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF TECHNO MUSIC (WHATEVER THE HELL THAT IS), Do you think Prince could pull off a good one?

P's preferences in synthesizer sounds and production technique don't suit techno too well.I can't picture him doing anything analogue, dirty and minimal, anyway.

I'm imagining the end result would sound forced. Kind of like your dad trying to pretend he's hip to your record collection.

What is your point?
I'll say it again:
The LinnDrum alone is enough 2 prove it.

By the way... Controversy was released in 1981, meaning it was recorded before then... 1999 was released in 1982. Aren't these in the early '80s??

That is a great track, Green Velvet are great.

Green Velvet, Chromeo, Felix da Housecat, the influence of Prince circa 80-84 is very evident in these guys work. I'd love to see Prince reciprocate that influence.

have anyone heard of The New Deal, or King Sunshine? They are bands who play funky house music with live instruments, and they even have a horns section. I think Prince can pull off something like this, with a more guitar oriented sound. and even though I think he should lose the horns in his current music, they may actually work in this genre.
