It is a good song. If I remember correctly it was a original candidate for the 1999 album. And although I like it, I can't think of a single tune that it would replace on that album. I would like to have seen it released as a B-side during that time. At the very least it should have been included on the Crystal Ball set. That album could have been so much better than it was.

It's a great track, one of very few circulating out-takes that shines. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

What is a moonbeam level anyway?
I can understand what a moonbeam is. But what's a level and how could someone send one to someone else? That's why he never released it. It don't make no sense.

Everytime I hear that song I love it. One of my fave of the few outtakes i've
heard. "Why'd I waste my kisses on you baby?" R.I.P. Prince You've finally found your way back home. Well Done.

Apparently it was intended for the "1999" album but replaced by "Free"....
Now imagine that album WITH Moonbeam Levels on it....

Uptown's the Vault says that the lyrics of the chorus are: "peace and glory of moonbeam levels to be"
while I always thought (and still do) it was "please send all your moonbeam levels to me".... Mind you, they're both cryptic as fuck....

Hmmm, I never saw that in The Vault before now, I always heard it as "please send...." too. Just listening to it now, I still think it's "please send...." The first would could be peace, but the next part definately sounds like "send all your", I can't hear "glory" at all. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

Did critics slam Crystal Ball the song??? What did they think was so bad about it? You know, I love this song to death, it just might be my favorite Prince song. RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Now imagine that album WITH Moonbeam Levels on it.... Yep. Probably cuz the two songs are so similar, musically, P wouldn't want them on the same album. Would have loved to seen this as a b-side during 82-83. "Extra Loveable" should have DEFINATELY been a b-side as well. But, "Moombeam" isn't a stronger cut than "Free", lyrically or musically, so, P definately made the right decision. But yeah, it's one of my favorites of his non-released material. Most fans tend to pick "Free" as one of the weaker cuts on 1999 and wish he hadn't replaced "Moonbeam Levels" with it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
