I think Anx may be right, although recording music isn't like a sportsman reaching their peak and retiring, I'm sure Prince could still put out an album as regular as he used to if he chose. Most artists simply run out of steam because they run out of inspiration, lose their fan-base or simply become fat on the fruits of their success. That isn't true with Prince as far as I can see.

So what's going on? I think he may be taking some time out to simply relax and recharge his batteries and be a husband to Mani. He's been consistently stuck in a recording studio or on tour for so long now - I remember in an interview with him and Mayte around the Emancipation release time, he said she had forced him to go into 'studio rehab' which just shows he is aware that spending so much time with his music does harm his relationships.

As for never seeing a year like 2004 again, well for a long time no one around hear ever thought a year like 2004 would come along either, so it just goes to show, never say never...

How do you arrive at over a year & a half?
Musicology was released in late April 2004.
Thats barely over a year ago.

i just think prince is at a point where he doesn't have a whole lot more to prove, and that he's getting more of a reputation as a live performer than a studio artist these days, and that he has an opportunity to enjoy his wife and the circle of people around him without having to worry about his money or his legacy. the stakes to produce are pretty low for him right now - he can pretty much do what he wants. i see him maybe taking inventory of where he is as a musician and where he can go, and making music that challenges him, whether or not it's something we expect, when we expect it.

just a theory. shrug

Did you see him with those pyjamas at the NAACP awards? I mean he'll be coming on with his heeled grandad slippers soon neutral

Music is getting crapper and dumber to suit George Bush's plans of brain numbing kids. nod Prince surely isnt gonna be part of that to go full on commercial like he did with Musicology anymore. I reckon he should personally deliver vault releases to all his fans every month nod

eek That was the most depressing post I've ever read.

PS - I haven't been to the org in a while, so what's the deal with the thing that says "avatar" instead of anyone having avatars? Did P's lawyers crack down on the org like they did on Housequake a while back?

That's true. Prince doesn't take long to record enough material for a new album - he's not some band who slave for years trying to get the perfect song or mix right. He could release a dozen albums tomorrow with the material he's recorded, probably even recently. The real question is, what is he waiting for? What's preventing him from releasing it this minute? Part of his argument with Warners was that they wanted him to stagger his releases more and he wanted to release it as he finished it - and now he appears to be staggering releases for maximum impact himself.

Even the odd new track on the NPGMC site would be nice...

Well, maybe he has other things to think about that aren't related to music...like a baby...(hint, hint)

we are so far behind...I think there's 3 or 4 cds he's made (besides Musicolgy) since 2002.

I think once again he wants to reinvent a way to release the music. All these experiments since 1996...I'm still waitng to hear the culmination of his results.

I think competition is the keyword here. Back in the days, competition was much fiercer...the RnB/Soul department was stronger, Rock was stronger, even "Pop" was stronger...
So many lament about the state of music today, but then again, you can already feel and hear a change, whether it be people slowly but surely getting fed up with all those 50 Cents and other bullshit rappers ( and I´m coming from a HipHop background, even I am fed up with most of todays rappers),or Rock emerging again ( see the Foo Fighters´latest album, Velvet Revolver and so on..people are also getting fed up with all the Limp Biscuits and Fred Dursts of the world and want the real deal, rough and raw and skillful, not some NuMetal bullshit).
Plus there are people like D´Angelo who will surely recover again, and Erykah Badu and many other talents.
With all these different genres becoming more interesting again I´m really curious about Prince´s next big release. In fact , I can´t remember the last time I was so excited about a new album...maybe during the "slave" years ?
Anyway, it´s been getting better and better since 2001.

I think one trouble is that waiting so long you start to expect something really magnificent from Prince - if we eventually get something middle-of-the-road like Musicology (imo) then we are gonna be extra disappointed.

Reincarnate

What I love about Prince is that you can never rule him out.

He may never make another commercially viable recording. But then again, he might just. And I'd rather put my money on the second option than the first.

... I wish he'd play Glastonbury and introduce some younger people to the music sad

It's gotta be hard for him to have that pressure from his fans to demand more music. The man's been killin' it since what, 1978? If he decides to retire, I wouldnt be bothered, although I would love a farewell album from him biggrin
