Prince being the first to do something

You know what I was thinking? Prince really IS the first to try something. You know I was watching the Gangster Glam video and you see Prince dressing all pimpy, with his girl and his game boyz and driving around Mpls. showing off his hot cars and hitting the clubs...well at the time this was shot rappers were not doing videos like this and acting like this...but now...EVERY rap video is practactly a rip off of this concept! This "Yo look at me and my money and my girls and my friends and this is how we live!" Look at Snoop dogg, Ja Rule, 50 Cent, and they all are about this now. But back in 1991 when Prince did this it was Ice Cube, Ice T, NWA, and it was all Compton, ghetto, gansta rap, baggy clothes, gangs...Prince really did it first! biggrin

I've heard of him, don't know his music tho...I ment in a general sense tho...I was just giving another example of Prince being an inovator.

Hmm, interesting thought, even if it may not be valid.

I'll have to do some research.

Actually Krystal666 may have a point... (though I don't on any level profess to be an expert on the history of rap lol).

From what I remember, although rap was being shown on MTV, it was still considered by the mainstream as an underground/ghetto/injustice/protest music movement (just like a lot of other music styles begin - as a form of protest/difference). Prince may very well have had a hand in turning rap into the whole "flashy/pimp/big cars/skanky women" thing it became... There's no denying that "Gett Off" was a hit (at least in the clubs)

At the very least, I don't think it's unfair to say that he injected a lot of sexuality into rap
