Create your own album for: 1983

There have been rumors of a 1983 studio album which may or may not actually be true. Regardless, I thought it would be fun to create an album for 1983. Here's the game:

    1 - Give the album a title.
2 - Create a tracklist (using circulating Prince tracks - none that were released at a later date or in other forms by Prince himself - this album should fit in like a "real" Prince album).
    3 - Name a lead-off single, and 2 or 3 follow-up singles.
4 - Suggest b-sides for the singles (again, circulating Prince tracks that have not been released elsewhere).

This is not about what really happened in 1983 - it's just a game to see what might have happened.

I ran a thread about this very album over a year ago. Prince talked about a REAL album existing in Rolling Stone magazine.
SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him."

thumbs up! 1999 definitely deserved two-years' worth of attention! The album actually spent more than 150 weeks on the charts. I don't think any other Prince album has come close to that run.

Sorry I couldn't abide by the rules strictly, as I used tracks that were later released, otherwise it limits the pool of circulating tracks that can be used, and it would look like other tracklists just jiggled around. smile

Prince promoted it a little in early 1983 but, for the rest of the year, he was busy making the movie "Purple Rain".

Back in those days, everyone (not just Prince) made an album every year. Information about a movie was not leaked until well into 1984, right before the "Purple Rain" album came out. During 1983 and the early part of 1984, people were starting to worry if Prince had faded away forever like so many other artists had.

I definately would have loved an album in 1983 to tide me over till the next year. biggrin

Hey Moonbeam, was this the offical non released album? Where did you get that info? Is No Call U the one that goes "Don't call me, I'll call U"? If that's the case then I've just heard 5 of those tracks, Turn It Up, No Call U, Feel U Up, Irresistible Bitch and Possessed. That could have been a great album. All Day, All Night is one of my favourite tracks from that or any era.

It's not official, but all of those tracks are circulating in one form or another. I've just sequenced them in a way that makes sense to me.

"No Call U" does have those lyrics. I've always thought "All Day, All Night" fits better with Purple Rain era material. biggrin

I'd love to hear Moonbeam Levels. Is it similar to The Beautiful Ones?

People often compare it to Free, and it's the similarity that is often cited as the reason it wasn't included on 1999.

The songs you guys mentioned are really great - some of them I remember hearing on older boots a friend played me ;=)

Are there any remastered versions out, you know those where you think, wow, that sounds almost like a properly produced album? Or is it that in 1983 quality was gnerally quite low?

All cool songs that u all have listed, but many off those are more suited for b-sides than actual cuts for a strong Prince album. Many of them are not of the quality of say "Little Red Corvette", or "When Doves Cry". One of the strongest of the lot definately would be "Extra Loveable". He would have had to have done some editing on that bad boy, though.

Alot of people forget that Mia Bocca was done in 1983 too. I have to dig out my Uptown books to give a real nice track listing.

So true. I don't think P would have released that himself, though.

It was mentioned in the script to Dreams wasn't it? Sung by Lisa, to Wendy.

Yep, you're right, it is. I can see that then, but only in a Purple Rain album format. I guess it would have worked with Lisa on lead vocals on a 83 album. Don't really see P letting someone else have all of the lead vocal duties on one of his albums. Especially then.

Jill Jones released Mia Boca as a single.

I think blackguitaristz was specifically referring to letting someone take a lead vocal on an album *in his own name* at that time.

Of course, it was only a year or two later to I Wonder U, and A Place In Heaven was slated for The Dream Factory of course.
