vainandy said: I just bought the DVD this afternoon and thought it was hilarious. He made fun of Charlie Murphy because Prince beat him at basketball. He said "This little four foot something....a little androgynous 'thing' beat him at basketball. I wouldn't even tell anybody about that". He made fun of the "ooowahh" and licked his lips. He said Prince beating Charlie at basketball sure said a lot for Charlie's masculinity. He said Prince didn't even know what color he was. I thought it was funny as hell. It was classic Rick James stuff he has been talking for years. If Rick talked about Prince and didn't say anything bad, people would have been disappointed. Rick would have not been Rick.

He said Rick tried to be "friendly" while they were touring, but Prince just kept to himself for the most part. Probably because of the drug use that was going on. Rick once said, Prince was "rude" to his mother all bets were off after that. Pretty soon there was this real machismo rivalry between them, You can imagine how much of a prick Prince could be if he feels your against him. It didn't help that Prince was reportedly kicking Ricks ass musically during their shows and that Prince lured Vanity away from him. I always laughed at Rick going off on Prince because as much as he claimed he "hated" him...he was rocking the "purple rain" victorian look and did a "purple rain-esque" scene in his video for "glow" (I think that was the one correct me if I'm wrong".
The man had been to court, been crack addicted, been to jail, tons of family stuff going on and all he could do after 25 years is still talk about how much he hated Prince. Very sad, funny and fucked up. That kinda fits in with the last paragraph of my original post. Maybe Rick had good reason to hate Prince (if the lil' dude had shown out with my mother . . .) and maybe he was just jealous. But after 25 years I mighta let it go. ´ But in the end , shortly before he died, he acknowledged Prince as a true keeper of the Funk . " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Does anyone remember a show on VH1, back in the late 1990s, called "The List"? This show featured celebrity guests who would make ten nominations for whatever the topic was about, and then vote some of them off to make a "top three" list.
Anyway, one of the episodes featured a topic called "Top Three Artists Of The 1980s". Rick James was one of the guests on this particular episode. This was shortly after his stroke and he was recovering. He had gained a tremendous amount of weight and had not fully gotten his voice back. He sounded kind of like a frog when he talked. I felt sorry for his appearance and his voice, but apparently, Rick was feeling fine and well and on the way to recovery. He felt so good, he even got a shot at Prince on that show. Rick made one of his nominations for Michael Jackson as the biggest artist of the 1980s. For another of his nominations, Rick nominated himself. One of the female celebrity guests nominated Prince. I was waiting to see Rick's reaction if someone nominated Prince because, naturally, Prince's name is going to come up when mentioning music in the 1980s. Rick looked at the woman and said, "Good choice...very good choice. She's very talented and can she can work those heels." Anyway, ten names were nominated and then the celebrities started each voting their choice off. My phone rang in the middle of all this so I missed who Rick James voted off but I can almost guess who. Anyway, when the top three artists of the 1980s were decided on, the winners was as follows: 1. Michael Jackson 2. Madonna 3. Rick James Andy is a four letter word.

I also remember from that show that Rick kept throwing up the funk sign and stupid ass rocker Brett Michaels kept asking him "WHY ARE YOU THROWING UP THE ROCK SIGN". I wanted to smack that silly bastard, shows you he knew nothing about the FUNK!!!!

They could also re-air the "Rick James: Behind The Music" and "Behind The Music: Studio 54" in which Rick made comments on. VH1 ain't shit anymore. I don't think they even did anything for Prince's birthday this year like they used to. [Edited 6/7/05 21:28pm] Andy is a four letter word.

Yeah, I saw the DVD and it was funny; to a point. But Rick hated George Clinton back in the day when George and the P-Funk all stars were smoking his butt on stage and off the stage. Man, I miss the 70s. Rick could not hold George's jockstrap and all you would hear from Rick was "they are trying to steal my stuff" or " I was first to play rock and roll with R&B" Man, give me a break.
I just wish that Rick would have learned how to deal with that hate and then try to hook up with Prince and Uncle George. Man they would have made one bad record back in the day! But Rick, even though you hated my MPLS homeboy, I do feel sad that you had to pass. RIP man. Jelly “When I give food to the poor, they call me a saint. Maybe from a stroke, which was maybe brought on by the harsh lifestyle he led, talking shit on a man who's life is completely 2gether and still at the top of his own game. Maybe not on top of "the game" but on top of his "own game"...
Maybe if rick hadn't spent his life running around trying to disrespect and impress people. He might have been in a better position. Cocain IS a helluva drug rick...it shows... I agree with that!!!! Beside, All That cocain and marajuaina AKA Mary Jane that made him a WACK!!!! "Welcome 2 The Dawn!"

Vh1 sucks, but Vh1 is supplying what everyone seems to want to watch...unecessary, useless celebrtiy gossip. If everyone would cut off the TV when Jessica, Paris, Britany comes on the air their ratings would slip and they might consider doing real music programming like they use to. But they only show what you all watch.

Watch Vh1 Soul.
I really do think Rick's anger came from jealousy. When you talk to people who aren't really hardcore into music, and you ask them "who were the top guys in music in the 80s" I bet the majority of the people would say Michael Jackson and Prince. well, I would PRINCE than Michael. Hah.
