Rick James' Extended Interview on "Chappelle's Show Season 2": Wow, he HATED Prince

Man, I was watching Rick James' extended interview from the "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories," and Rick went off about the Prince basketball story in a very personal way about Prince. I wanted to laugh, but it was so hateful it wasn't funny at a point. It was sad realizing how much Rick hated Prince.

Maybe he had a good reason. Maybe he was just jealous Prince had so much more commerical success. Maybe both. I dunno.

This is nothing new...they came out in the same era...tried to make waves with their own funky styles, which Prince was able to take to stratospheric heights, spurning more hatred, then it simply just came down to overall talent....Prince won that hands down!

Then he took Vanity off of his ass too!! evillol

I wish I had the patience to sit through that whole interview. Does anyone know the exact time he talks about Prince, so I can fast forward to it?

I have GOT to get this DVD. It sounds great. I would love to see Dave Chapelle do both Rick James and Prince in the same sketch and have them trading insults. That would be hilarious. lol

I saw this and found it quite pathetic. A man who can hardly talk, speech all slured and shit. Maybe from a stroke, which was maybe brought on by the harsh lifestyle he led, talking shit on a man who's life is completely 2gether and still at the top of his own game. Maybe not on top of "the game" but on top of his "own game"...

Maybe if rick hadn't spent his life running around trying to disrespect and impress people. He might have been in a better position. Cocain IS a helluva drug rick...it shows...

I know all that, but seeing Rick spewing that hate after all these years, and just months before he died . . . it was sad.

He was calling him a "little 4 foot thing," and making fun of his "oowwaa"'s, etc. Everyone does it, but it seemed bitter coming from him.

Good points. I felt pity for Rick knowing that he carried that to his dying day.

It woulda been funny had it not been so earnest. There's a difference b/w when Eddie or Jamie or Dave do it and when one of his rivals does it, almost unsolicited. It was funny to me at first, and then it just morphed into full-blown "hateration."

I just bought the DVD this afternoon and thought it was hilarious. He made fun of Charlie Murphy because Prince beat him at basketball. He said "This little four foot something....a little androgynous 'thing' beat him at basketball. I wouldn't even tell anybody about that". He made fun of the "ooowahh" and licked his lips. He said Prince beating Charlie at basketball sure said a lot for Charlie's masculinity. He said Prince didn't even know what color he was. I thought it was funny as hell. It was classic Rick James stuff he has been talking for years. If Rick talked about Prince and didn't say anything bad, people would have been disappointed. Rick would have not been Rick.

I miss Rick James talking shit about Prince...I'll have to get this. You guys should get Dez's book (if it's available), he talks about their rift. He said Rick tried to be "friendly" while they were touring, but Prince just kept to himself for the most part. Probably because of the drug use that was going on. Rick once said, Prince was "rude" to his mother all bets were off after that. Pretty soon there was this real machismo rivalry between them, You can imagine how much of a prick Prince could be if he feels your against him. It didn't help that Prince was reportedly kicking Ricks ass musically during their shows and that Prince lured Vanity away from him. I always laughed at Rick going off on Prince because as much as he claimed he "hated" him...he was rocking the "purple rain" victorian look and did a "purple rain-esque" scene in his video for "glow" (I think that was the one correct me if I'm wrong".

The man had been to court, been crack addicted, been to jail, tons of family stuff going on and all he could do after 25 years is still talk about how much he hated Prince. Very sad, funny and fucked up.

That kinda fits in with the last paragraph of my original post. Maybe Rick had good reason to hate Prince (if the lil' dude had shown out with my mother . . .) and maybe he was just jealous. But after 25 years I mighta let it go.

Oh, it's great. I still haven't watched all three DVDs yet. I've been watching the "I'm Rick James Bitch" sketch over and over. I had only seen it once. It cracks me up every time when he calls Charlie Murphy over real close to the bar and then he slaps the shit out of him. My stomach is still hurting after that one. lol The real Rick James seemed to be enjoying himself doing his part as well.

Disc three contains the interviews by Rick James and Charlie Murphy in their entirety before they used certain parts in the sketches. It would have been funny if they had added the Rick James interview parts about Prince playing basketball with Charlie in the Prince sketch. The Prince sketch is great but that would have made it even funnier.

During the "I'm Rick James Bitch" sketch, you can also listen to comments from Dave Chapelle and I guess the director? I still haven't listened to all of that yet. It took me a while before I realized that part was on there. Whoever Dave was talking with (I guess it's the director) said he went to the Rick James funeral and it was five hours long. Charlie had told them that one of Rick's favorite words he used was "celebration" so they tried to make the funeral a celebration.

nod It's true. I communicated with people who went and they said that that was Rick's wishes for a celebration.

The Charlie Murphy interview is great also. He talks about Rick's partying lifestyle. He said Rick's house was a huge compound with an indoor swimming pool in the middle and connecting buildings. He was snowed in once at Rick's house and he didn't lack for a thing. He said the partying, women, and drugs flowed like water.
