Appreciation for the D and P era

Come on you guys all knew you loved it when Prince hit it big again with Cream, Gett off and Diamonds and Pearls. You miss the typhoon hairdoo, Diamond and Pearl, Game boyz, Rosie Gaines.....you miss hearing stories about Prince parting it up in Mpls., going from club to club, giving werid stares at various women. lol You know you miss the early ninties! biggrin

Things I loved about the era:

1) The mass exposure he got on TV, magazines, etc.

2) The strong radio and video play of the singles of Cream and Diamonds and Pearls on MTV and VH1.

3) Looking in Billboard and seeing Prince representing.

4) The return of the fairweather fan, the Purple Rain fan. I like when all the clueless people come back and say "I love Prince" even though they had been slagging him off for years. Just like last year.

5) How about that 3-D cover?

6) I even liked the typhoon 'do.

All good things they say never last...

Although I was really young, I remember DIAMONDS AND PEARLS.
I read that the album went 7x platinum!!

That's a good comeback from SIGN O THE TIMES and LOVESEXY which only went platinum (i think).

MONEY DON'T MATTER 2NITE turned me into a huge Prince fan, instead of just a big fan!

Good CD. 1991 was a good year for him. R&B and pop radio played a lot of the songs off this CD. It definetly made up for the "Graffiti Bridge" flack from the year before. The peformance of him on Arsenio was incredible. My friends and I talked about that peformance (nonstop) that whole week.

hell yeah i miss it. i moved here (mpls) in 90' with a hot rap group ( i was manager) and my own indie label selling tapes out of the trunk. our first day in town we walked down hennepin and heard our song blasting out of a music store. before the end of the year we'd played first avenue ( we showed up for soundcheck early just to lay on the stage and stare at the ceiling) and hung out with Tony M, Micheal Bland and Jermome Benton. by december 91' we were introduced to prince ( by TC Ellis)in the VIP section at Glam Slam. Those were the fuckin days.

well, if he's got any more tracks like "I Wonder", which i think was recorded during the D&P sessions, then my appreciation for the era grows considerably.

I loved the success and a couple of songs, but the album itself was a step down for Prince artistically. Instead of taking his audience forward like he had done even with some songs on Batman and Graffiti Bridge, he for the first time settled comfortably in a kind of unchallenging pop formalism. By contrast, Musicology (which could be accused of the same) sounds relatively fresh because it at least revisits experimentations of the past, whereas D & P goes for safer pop formulas for the most part.
