"The War" by Prince

The War by Prince. How you all like this 20+ minute odessy by The Purple One?

"Microchip for yo Neck"...1 2 The Evolution will be Colorized.

That background Choir emotion, Prince lead guitar soaring.

It's been so long since I've listened to it... it's a distant memory. But I liked it, for the most part.

Paisley Park has a special place in my hear...cuz He played it at the only Performance afterparty I've been to. It was at the House of Blues in LA...a good chunk of the whole performance ended up on The Aftershow disc on ONA...Live. Sadly, Paisly Park Didn't make it..sad...It was a helluva performance of it too. Reminiscent of the extended version of the song cuz he rawked guitar on it for a while.

Snap

I'd also love a live rock version of "Paisley Park" -- sounds so good...

oh yeah, and to stay on topic, "The War" is pretty cool funk-rock workout... love the whole feeling, especially when he gets wild on guitar

I think it is a brilliant track. It has an eerie atmosphere to it that perfectly suits the subject matter. Looking back, it is only rarely we see Prince being pseudo-political, and usually they are some of his best work. In this case, I think he was ahead of his time - a lot of the things he talks about are coming true.

It would have been cool if he'd done an entire album of serious, low key, sombre tracks like this, it would have been a nice change, especially when you think around this time he'd just put out Newpower Soul!

Themes aside, what's so great about it musically? It's ridiculously long and meandering. It only gets good at the end. That's not enough.

I know what you're saying. But I'd rather hear an overlong track like this with meaningfullyrics than one of the ridiculously long and meandering but musically more developed instrumentals on Xpectation, C-Note or NEWS! At least this has a bit of insight into Prince's thoughts on the world.

It's long, but I think the length and slow build-up act to put you on edge and unsettle you. Nobody complains that orchestral symphonies are long; this is a hypnotic symphony of doom and gloom.

Cool!

That's because they're interesting all the way through.

Well, I think The War is interesting all the way through.

What do you think about the 20 minute version of America? Is that interesting all the way through or ridiculously long and meandering? Or the Scandalous Sex Suite?

Those two are better than The War at least.

The War sounds like a constant loop til it nears the end and actually develops into something interesting.

liked the groove when i first heard it; not listened to the war for quite a while now, which probably says something. the lyrics dragged on a bit. felt a bit, "okay prince! you've made your point!" after a while.
