Yes! I've always drawn this conclusion too, with the little segue of When Will We Be Paid in there too. For me, The War was a glimmer of hope, at the time it surfaced, Prince was at his lowest commercially, and after Emancipation and NPS, it seemed like Prince really wasn't either commercially, or artistically challenging any more. Then the War slapped down, the first instance, many may remember, was the real audio on L4OA - I'd listen to that over and over, I loved it. Then the share-trees began, and that was great - it seemed like all Prince's talk during the TGE period about 'free the music' was realising itself, this was a track that was officially sanctioned to be shared amongst the fans - we were sharing new, official music for no other reason than to propigate it amongst the fanbase. I thought, for that very brief moment, it was very exciting to be a Prince fan again. TRC was the last time I felt that excitement from Prince's music, and I always felt TRC and the War shared something musicially, like The War was a precursor to TRC. The War is totally off the hook, I can't say enough about it. I love it when Prince goes off like that. Prince, in you I found a kindred spirit...Rest In Paradise.

I feel like you read my mind. I had the same feelings. when TRC came out I was getting sceptical about Prince abilities to produce new music that would sound exciting. Then came TRC which was like a bomb. After that, nothing. And the war is just like a raw TRC.
