Funkadelic & Prince

Today I bought the new Funkadelic Collection. I heard through the compilation and recognized some effects that Prince used as well. I´m talking bout prayers in a song, deep robotic voices (1999),..so my question is: how much did George Clinton & Funkadelic influence Princes early work? Was there any kind of collaboration? i can´t tell, but there has to be some kind of connection. help me out- tell me the truth!

Yes George Clinton and the various groups he supervised were all a huge influence on prince. They've colloborated a number of times, only a couple of which have wound up on either of their albusm though. We Can Funk from Graffiti Bridge was co-written by and features George Clinton and the Big Pump on one of George's albums likewise was co-written by and features Prince. A Couple of Prince's unreleased songs were made collaboratively with George too: Soul Psychodelicide and Paradigm.

Yes. Parliament/Funkadelic definately ifluenced P. Not just musically either:

Funkadelic - "Mommy, What's A Funkadelic" 1970
Prince - "Mommy, why does everybody have a bomb?" 1982.
Prince wrote "Erotic City" the same night after seeing George Clinton in concert. He said we wanted a "P-Funk" type track. On the same note, view "Scarlet Pussy". "Atomic Dog, Scarlet Pussy".
Funkadelic's calling card was blending funk with rock. Something P used to great effect.

What's a doubledrag is that I find so many people who are kneedeep into P, hate when they discover P's influences. I mean, it really bothers them. It's like that with a lot of folks regarding Hendrix. They hate Hendrix. Mad at him, because as much as they hate to admit it, Hendrix had such a huge influence on P, and they resent Hendrix for it. The whole concept of Purple Rain, the sound, the look, the imagery, the guitar playing, the clothes, would not have even EXISTED if it wasn't for Jimi Hendrix. So much of why people on this very site like Prince is because of these very elements.

For a while early-nineties, George Clinton was on the Paisley Park label and released 2 albums I believe - I heard a rumour that George was almost bankrupt and Prince basically rescued him by getting him onto Paisley Park/Warners.

7"? neutral

Soul Psychodelicide is unreleased, from 1989.

Paradigm - Eep, I didn't like it, so I never tracked it down, wasn't it on a promo CD, from around the time of his last live CD? Someone else can answer that properly.

As far as I know, George will include Paradigm on his new album, which I believe is being pushed back again and again but will be released eventually.

nod Very well said. thumbs up! I personally love finding out about Prince's influences because it introduces me to musicians I may have never discovered on my own. Prince was the gateway for me. He inspired me to seek out a wealth of musicians that have become many of my all time favorites. Furthermore, I can appreciate Prince's music better when I find out how he synthesized the many inspirations he pulls from.
