Sister..... I was only 16 but I guess that's no excuse
My sister was 32, lovely and loose She don't wear no underwear She said it only gets in her hair And it's got a funny way of stoppin' the juice My sister never made love 2 anyone else but me She's the reason 4 my, uh, sexuality She showed me where it's supposed 2 go A blowjob doesn't mean blow Incest is everything it's said 2 be Oh sister - don't put me on the street again Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend I was only 16 and only half a man My sister didn't give a goddamn She only wanted 2 turn me out She'd take a whip 2 me until I shout Oh motherfucker, she's a motherfucker, can't U understand? Oh sister - don't put me on the street again Oh sister - I just wanna be your friend I know what U want me 2 do Put me on the street and make me blue Oh sister! Oh sister! Oh! Now I've heard this song for years and have never really understood if it's just a silly song, or a page from his diary. Anyone got any info on Sharon? Let me put this issue to rest, please.

no way. prince would've been squashed.
fact that he's alive today proves the song was a fictional tale.

Nope, it isnt fictional, it is about having sex with his halvesister when he was visiting New York to get a record deal.....

No wonder it took so many years to cleanse his soul. That's not right.

Yes, it's a song.
Do you also expect "Strays Of The World", "NPG Bum Rush The Ship" and "New World" be about real life experiences too?

"my sister didn't give a God damn!"
I always think the delivery of that line, the tone of Prince's voice, indicates to us the comedy in the song. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

I've just read a book about Prince writen in the eighties and somehow the writer either quotes or repeats it in his words that the songs on that album were biographical. Couldn't believe my eyes when I read that.

well, he was about 16 when this happened, his halvesister in his early thirties... Prince was a shy guy back then, i think his halvesister trapped him in, and for him the song was a way to deal with the complexity of that experience(s), i think

Yeah, before I got Dirty Mind a few weeks ago, I was a little disgusted at Sister's lyrics. Now I've come to regard Sister as a pretty funny track. "Ohmuthafuckajustamuthafucka!" This is probably the same sister who wanted to spill her guts about him on some interview in 1990. [Edited 5/4/05 21:56pm] Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.

I am reading "Prince: The First Decade (Dance,Music, Sex, Romance).....and it indicates that Sister has nothing to do with him and his half sister.....the song was intended as an expression of the pain and confusion an incest victim, or anyone who has been manipulated by a person in a position of trust, must go thru..... Should be at least, but hey if it sounds rockabilly to you... it must be tellin' about something.

Not really. It's still essentially a shock-piece, first and foremost. Regardless of what kind of more subtle meanings young Prince might have written into the lyrics. Nilsen's view is his own, but the song is far too tongue-in-cheek in overall to be just a masked vehicle for addressing "the pain of an incest victim". It's still a dirty fantasy nevertheless.

I think it's just Prince pissing his sister off -- Sharon. Not that it's true or anything. Kinda like the way "Darling Nikki" was used to mess with Apollonia in Purple Rain. She knew it was about her; though not true.
Nilsen says... "the song was intended as an expression of the pain and confusion an incest victim, or anyone who has been manipulated by a person in a position of trust..." Um, Prince says he was 16 at the time. If this is true, then who is using who?! We're not talking about a little boy here! [Edited 5/6/05 10:30am]

I think Nilsen's interpretation was a bit silly too.

age doesnt say a thing, there are people who are 50 and are still scared to live.....
Assuming that Prince is, by nature, very shy, and assuming that 16 year old adolesecents are wrestling with there hormones and the confusion of changing so dramatically (get a grip, most 16 year olds are still halve child / halve adult) i think Prince is trying to give this experience(s) a place in his life... We constantly grow on a mentally level, and i sense that Prince at age 22 - 23 (the time this song was released) definitely wasnt an adult, an still searching for wholeness....

So err if he was 16 when he slept with his sister how old was he when he lost his virginity to a girl with a rasberry beret which he took away from the place he worked? No Freestyling.

You guys can NOT belive this is a real life experience right? I mean Prince is a naughty boy but he is not THIS naughty!!! It is purly for shcck value.

How do you know this to be absolutely true? Did you read this in a "press" or "media" report? Do you know Prince, yourself, to know this song is a factual account? In other words: "The real matter is: have you ever talked to this guy? are you a close friend of him? dont you mix up his lyrical output with what is actually happening in his real life?" - riverpoet, on another thread (i'm sorry. I just had to say this, in light of the chastising and superior tone of riverpoet's posts on another thread regarding believing gossip and rumor about Prince's past/reputation/history. ) [Edited 5/10/05 14:47pm]

You know I was just kidding right? I know or at least suspect P likes women of all colors and ethnicities. Some people believe that couldn't be further than the truth!
