Who has covered Prince songs in concert and not in the studio?

Not including cover bands or tribute bands of course.Over the years I've hear that Beck has done Raspberry Beret,Eric Benet has done Girls and Boys,Aeorsmith has done parts of Sexy MF,Bon Jovi has done Purple Rain,I think Ween may have done Take Me With U.Others?

Some other examples:
- U2 have done The Cross in 1995, its actually the New Power Generation with Bono on vocals, recorded live at a concert in Dublin
- David Byrne has done a live cover of the Future in 2002 (i believe)
- Hindu Love Gods (Warren Zevon + threequarter of REM) have covered Raspberry Beret (I know its on record, i dont know if they performed it live)
- Belgian Singer has covered Sometimes it snows and Starfish and Coffee and translated them to dutch (Respectively: 'Soms sneeuwt het in de lente' en 'Zeesterren en koffie').

Wow! That first one was the only one I knew of but forgot. How are the others?

So this isn't really a cover at all.

It's prince and the New Power Generation performing at an aftershow, with Bono guesting on vocals and forgetting the words.

The David Byrne version is mediocre, he leaves out a lot of the lyrics, it is about 2.02 sec, i think its an impromptu song he played in between longer versions of his own songs

I never heard the Hindu Love Gods version, but as a big REM-fan i would love to hear it. I did read its on a record they recorded during three drunken nights, so i guess its sounding sloppy wink

I never heard the versions of Bart Peeters, i run into them on 'e-mule' but havent downloaded them. I know he is a big Prince fan, but he is not a splendid singer. In Holland and Belgium he is more known as a TV-presenter, an 'always happy'-kind of fellow. So, im holding my reservations for those versions.

Tina Turner used to perform Let's Pretend We're Married live, but changed the line "I'm gonna have fun every motherfuckin' night" to "I'm gonna rock'n'roll every day and every night." neutral

Barenaked Ladies ended a show a few years ago with When Doves Cry. They also played Wham's Careless Whispers in the encore. Awesome show and great versions of the songs.

That's right. I remember watching a PPV and besides IIWYGF, they did a little bit of Housequake and Nasty Girl.

If I'm not mistaken,Erica Badu sang Do Me Baby during an aftershow in Texas last year.Jamie Fox has been known to play a little of that and Adore from time to time as well.

Thanks for the info people!

Govt. Mule has used part of When Doves Cry for a while now....
It actually shows up on their double/triple live CD/DVD set "The Deepest End".
Warren Haynes incorporates it into one of their songs wonderfully.

LMFAO, I don't know if this counts, but I was at a charity event Saturday where a country artist named Pat Green played. Pat Green is HUGE in Texas.

Anyway, he's playing his last song, which was an up-tempo jam, and in the middle of it he breaks out with: "My name is Pat and I am funky; when it comes to funk, I am the junky".

I'm positive that I was the only person there who knew where that came from, LOL.

I actually have the Hindu Love Gods CD with "Raspberry Beret." Pretty good cover. Was very popular on the local alternative station at the time. The GOO GOO DOLLS used to cover "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man" in concert. I think it's actually on one of their early releases.

RodeoSchro,

I have heared different country-versions of Purple Rain by an amateureband from holland.

And, in a dutch TV-documentary about John Hiatt, he said that when you look underneath the surface Purple Rain is actually a country-song. He did emphasise his comment by playing Purple Rain on his acoustic guitar in a 'country way'

To be honest, to me Purple Rain always sounded like some Hendrix, Blues-kind of thing, but i know there are a lot of countryartists who did cover Purple Rain, so maybe its the case that some black funk/rock artist from Minneapolis became a megastar with a country-song lol

I think you may have a good point. I was at a concert by an up-and-coming country band (who apparently came and went already), and they played "Purple Rain". They did it just like Prince played it, and explained that it was their guitarist's favorite song to play.
