Battle Of The Beats: Prince VS. Dr. Dre

Pick your winner.

Prince (with his Linn LM-1) or Dr. Dre (with his Akai MPC 3000/2000)

My answer:

So far, Dre!

Think about it: The Doctor has the best beats within the 80's (with NWA, The D.O.C., Eazy-E), the 90's (as a solo artist, with Snoop Dogg, 2pac, Death Row Records) & the 2000's (with Slim Shady, 50 Cent, Mary J. Blige).

Most of Prince's best beats are just the 80's & a very fewer in the 90's.

Am I wrong?

Snap

Ice Cube gots better beats than Dre, no doubt about it. So the better question would be Cube or Prince? But even then, ya gotta consider the genre. Rap music has to have good beats because there's generally no melody to speak of, which means no singing either... not to mention the lack of live instruments played by professional musicians -- in Prince's case: arranged, produced, composed, and performed by one musician -- Prince. All Dre's got are the beats. So sad.

edit: well, okay... i'll even give Dre some props for lyrics too, but still he don't come close!

For Ice Cube, the beats were from The Bomb Squad, DJ Pooh, and Dr. Dre (when in NWA).

And yes, the different genres are a huge factor. And it's a good thing this thread is limited to just beats (drums & percussions). Otherwise, this is a huge mismatch!!!

Dre has never made a beats as interesting as housequake, irrisistible bitch, I wish u heaven part 3, or even newer stuff like High, or daisy chain...

now the Bonb Squad... damn... you can't beat Fear of a Black Planet.

Dre can't even appproach that album!

in my opinion. Music is subjective.

Prince by a long shot. Dr. Dre can't never speed his up, he's too damn slow. He was much better when he was in World Class Wrecking Crew.

Yeah I agree with Snap, I'd say Dre is the better editor, and Prince is the better creator. Dre takes existing samples from P-Funk and other sampled horns and basslines, and he edits them brilliantly. Prince creates; plays every instrument, edits his own samples and pieces together a song. So I have to say Prince.

Besides, sometimes Prince gets an idea, goes downstairs to his studio, and calls Rhonda horny to help him lay the track down. I couldn't focus with that fine woman in the room horny

Dre doesn't write his own lyrics.

Are you serious? I think you're just saying that cause he wore make-up as part of the WCWC band. And judging by your avatar, you like that sort of stuff, dont you? lol

To tell you the truth, Slim Shady would be the only MC that could rap on Dre's beats at a much faster tempo. Snoop & 50 couldn't keep up.

Oh, I definately think a star should look like a "star" but The World Class Wrecking Crew's music was a much faster tempo and songs like "The Fly" and "Bionic" contained instruments instead of samples. They were actual songs instead of "talking" over a beat. Any fool can rap over a beat that's slow enough.

Have you heard "Forget About Dre"? Dre was flowing fast on there.

This is not a good thread. For one, Prince is a musician and Dr. Dre is a mixologist. Prince and his band makes music and Dr. Dre makes beats. The Ice Cube thing - no - he does not make his own beats, he buys them. So there is no Dr. Dre vs Ice Cube.

I agree. Dre and Prince are both great, but are from two different worlds. Their too different. For example, Prince makes original music; Dre sometimes samples original music because that just hiphop.

But if ya'll mean Prince Vs. Dre as in a fist fight, then hands down Dre would win; and you know the Aftermath camp would NPG's ass too. lol

beats are not songs. Dre is good drum programer. Prince was a better one, he goes for the live effect now.For what Dre does in the style of music that he does he is the best. Dre's sound is very easy to recognize. Plus without Stan the guitar man, mike elizando or colin wolfe he'd be very limited.
