There's a difference though. im going to agree with everything you've just said (except for the highlighted part..hehehehe. and your statement about the three of them working together..i hate how people say, "oh..been there, done that"....and i guess they say it because prince himself has made comments to that effect in the past. but, these people have grown musically.....i think it would be earth shattering to hear what they can come up with today. one song. just one song would please me. Well said sos. That highlighted part is crap though. I've been a fan BEFORE Wendy and Lisa and a fan after. There's no denying the influence and the magic they created as a trio and Prince himself back in the day mentioned that they would tell him when something sounded like something he'd already done and he'd put it away in the vault. all three are geniuses in their own right.....and nobody should ever deny synergy like that. U2 is only the SECOND greatest rock band in the world. (Number One? The Rolling Stones) Prince is only the GREATEST artist (individual) in the world. I've been digging him since 1978. It's your opinion, man...

Aerogram said: Since Prince based his whole career on not having an editor, it would be a big change for him if he had to deal with someone truly deserving of that title, i.e. someone who can veto stuff. I can't think of anyone who could do that effectively, given Prince's ego, history and intimidating talents. Thinking he could use an editor is not knowing him very well as well as disregarding the essence of his career, which is creative freedom. There are also practical reasons - few people can actually keep up with Prince. When you are prone to recording everything yourself in the middle of the night, you tend to be captain of your own ship for obvious reasons. What Prince can use and has used... is collaborators that are not afraid to speak out. He has benefited from surrounding himself with creative, knowledgeable musicians that have influenced his music and his taste.
At the end, Prince would not be half as celebrated if he had employed genuine coproducers consistently. Look at Madonna and how people believe she owes everything to her producers. For better and for worse, Prince is entirely responsbile for the records he released, and that will be an important consideration when all is said and done and it's time to say who truly expressed himself as an artist in our time.. [Edited 4/30/05 10:15am] - I agree...It´s a complicated thing I dont think NOBODY could ever edit Prince...but sometimes I think Prince should be more of a perfectionist and do the editing HIMSELF. I think everybody agrees that he recorded lots of garbage during his career and lots of genius stuff too (i cant understand how someone writes great lyrics as ´SOTT´ and ´5 Women´ and record very silly lyrics too at the same time). There are other great songwriters that didn´t go through so many highs and lows.

Bono has given P a lot of credit for that. I just think P was pissed at the time. He really deserved that Grammy. I don't think you realize he has been nominated 30 times and only has six awards (LOL) You obviously don't know me very well and presume too much too. ----- What does my knowing you to do with anything ?

But I have to add that, as an artist myself, I understand the need of creative freedom an artist should have. Maybe I think that ´shoo be dooh´ is silly, but maybe Prince likes it for some reason. Who are we to say what´s crap and what is not? Let the test of time do the job...

I like U2, but I can see them becoming a pointless touring cash cow like the Rolling Stones pretty soon. They've still got a few years yet, as Bono's neck doesn't yet look like a vagina “If I can shoot rabbits/then I can shoot fascists”

I think people need to stop getting defensive when it's pointed out that Prince needs an "editor."
What people mean is not that Prince needs someone else to write or compose his music... he just needs someone to tell him the truth about what he composes. I've always found that brilliant people are often very self-critical of their best product. This to me is the biggest reason Prince needs an editor. He needs someone in the studio giving him positive affirmation when he feels like songs aren't good enough. Here's one example that I hope kind of sums this up. Endorphinmachine. Prince needed someone to tell him that the original version of that song had rawness and power that needed to be left alone. Adding a bunch of extra production wasn't going to help it. The reason that so much of Prince's most original work is on bootleg is because he seems to get self-conscious about some of his own best stuff. So the need for an editor is as much to give him some positive affirmation--that what he's producing really is great and that he doesn't need to keep tinkering and re-recording until all spontanaity is gone from his music and stuff soungs like it's Prince auto-pilot (like NPS, Rave, Musicology). Someone to tell the truth about what he composes?
I mean, he is the genious, he did the song, who the hell could tell Prince about what sounds good or what does not? What if Prince prefers the Endorphinemachine version on TGE over the former version? who is to say he is wrong? It's just matter of opinion. And his opinion will always be close to what HE wants than anybodys opinion. Prince does not need an editor. He needs artists around him that can inspire him.

whodknee said: TheFrog said: well, okay then, but i think it's unfair to point to W&L (or Prince for hanging with W&L) as being the sole reason for the drop in sales post-Purple Rain. A large reason for the drop in sales was that neither ATWIAD nor Parade were musically "other Purple Rains". And in terms of quality, ATWIAD and Parade are right up there among his best. musicology is a nice, safe pop record, you're right. i doubt that people would be raving about the tunes if they'd gone elsewhere, though. it's hard to say - sometimes other people do prince's songs better than he does himself. won't catch me bitching about TRC. lyrically, it's irritating at times (and offensive at times) but musically it's totally outstanding on the whole. but i agree to some extent - W&L certainly don't make the world go around. But they did have a hand in some of the greatest music our little fella's ever released. C'mon now. ATWIAD is nowhere near PR or Parade in terms of quality. I suspect those that feel he NEEDS W&L never really liked Prince to begin with. It's fine to miss them. Hell, sometimes I wish they would hook up again just for old time's sake and see what they could come up with. There's a difference though. on ATWIAD - well, each to their own and all. i disagree. i don't feel that he needs W&L in the slightest. i just think it's a pile o' poo that it was somehow just W&L's fault that the sales dropped off after Purple Rain. I am always happy to hear what other artist think about Prince ( who by the way has soooo much natural talent & style ) it would take someone much less controversial than Bono to voice his opinion on what he thinks Prince needs !!!
Prince has faults as well as Bono. Do you think Prince would be as opinionated about Bono as he was about him ? Personally you can NEVER tell me anything negative about him. He's absolutely marvelous !!!! SexyMF !!!!!!!

I think that in this thread the editor-role is interpreted too much in terms of some kind of a music filter. But that's not the kind of role that would be best here.
The ideal 'editor' would be a critic who is trusted by Prince, who doesn't make decisions and who doesn't just react in terms of liking or disliking. He/she should just be someone who helps Prince reflect on what he does. And you know what? I think that Larry Graham has been such a person for a long time, for the good and the bad of it! And I have the same feeling about Wendy & Lise for some reason. I don't know. I think that one essential thing about Prince is that he rarely lets anybody 'edit' him. The result is that he's sometimes brilliant, while he sometimes sounds to me like he's shooting himself in the foot. . [Edited 5/22/05 5:43am]
