Its interesting that some people think that "editing" Prince is a wholly bad thing. Personally, I think that if he comes out with stuff that sounds different and new (eg - no bass on When Doves Cry) then he should be left alone. Some things work, some things don't.

Where he DOES need editing is on the work that is just plain dull (most of Musicality for example). Its kind of difficult to get excited about some of that stuff. Get thee back to the studio!!!!!

When you listen to the Black album, lot of Sign Of The Times, hell even Batman tonnes of stuff on there just does not sound like anything else - noises, production etc.... Nowadays I think that a guitar sounds too much like a guitar, drums sound too much like drums, keyboards sound like the same ole same ole. Its hard to explain but...anyway, I hope you don't all hate me for these comments!!! (...maybe a few pwople will even understand!)

I think this is a very valid point you are making and I understand where you are going with your train of thought. It's kinda what I tried to state in my post about imagining Joni saying to Prince,"yeah, you can play a thousand instruments perfectly but where's all those little emotional inflections and strange little chords you used to flavor your music with>?"

With having said that,The Rainbow Children and N.E.W.S are some of the most musical and inspired things he's ever done. eek eek eek eek eek

And with these remarks, my long-standing hatred for Bono comes to an end. I have hated U2 and Bono since 1987, when the greatest travesty in the history of the Grammy's occurred, namely Sign O' The Times losing to The Joshua Tree. Okay, I knew it was going to happen but damn it, that was Prince's shot at the best album, his most ambitious album to date (and still). Seeing Prince jilted in the audience as those wankers went up on stage pissed me off to no end. (And to paraphrase the man, Prince could do what U2 did on The Joshua Tree but they could not do Housequake). Anyway I have always thought of Bono as a pretentious, moronic airbag bastard since then (even though I did dig Achtung Baby) but now, I will forgive him.

Bono's respect for the man is obvious and heart-felt and I think his comments are dead on. And I agree that Prince has needed an editor from time to time but with Prince getting the final veto power. There are things that he has done that an outsider (i.e. someone who doesn't live in his purple brain) might have knocked down that turned out to be absolutely genius. There are also experiements that Prince has had that have fallen flat on their ass. Whether there is anybody out there who could have been able to tell the difference is the question.

Bono is for real. I was never a big fan of U2 until this year. They have staying power, and have done more good work and good music than most bands in the past year, much less the past 25 years.

Kudos to the band. "Uno, Dos, Tres, Catorce!!!!!"

If an artist winning or losing a fake award bothers you this much for so you long you have severe issues. But I'm sure Bono will appreciate you forgiving him rolleyes

I understand what lovemachine means, I hated U2 after Prince was robbed back then as well. But I like some of U2's music & Bono did give Prince props in his acceptance speach, because everyone knew Sign O The Times deserved that award, hands down

I want Prince's albums to be Prince's visions of what they should sound like, not someone elses.

It's worked many times in the past.

Besides, who's to say what's hot and what's not? One mans rubbish is another mans gold. It's all subjective.

Bono's a pretentious hypocrite.

Anyone see there a few weeks ago that they were touting Bono for the head of the World Bank before Paul Wolfoneocon got it - could have been interesting:

Bono: Call up the True Funk Soldiers. We're going to edit Zambia.

Prince: OK, whatever. You learnt how to play guitar yet?

You felt that strongly about him for all this time JUST because of that? That wasn't hatred, that was a grudge! neutral

That aside, I find it ironic that all this time Bono held him in high regard and P was the one shooting his mouth off back then acting like a petulant child with that moronic quote. I always thought that was one of the lamest things he ever said - not to mention more than a little childish.

Still, times change eh.

-----
If P was being a petulant child then I doubt he would have given Bono the info on obtaining U2's master tape back. Bono has given P a lot of credit for that.

I just think P was pissed at the time. He really deserved that Grammy. I don't think you realize he has been nominated 30 times and only has six awards (LOL)

that I like a lot of stuff P did before W&L came on boards or I should say before Wendy came on board. I like some of the stuff P did without their involvement after they left. I enjoy RnB music. W&L alienated P's RnB fan base.
Witness the drop-off in sales on ATWIAD and Parade.

It seems a lot of "negativ energy" comes from people vying as much as possible to insert W&L into Prince as if he never was succesful pre Purple Rain post Parade confuse

you need to head over to housequake or to our associated artist section and read the statements from people like dez, jesse, morris, andre and dr. fink. you would be suprised to find out which songs and which quitar riffs or synth riffs are contributed to people *other* then prince...

and when i state my pleasure with wendy and lisa's contributions to prince's legacy, its not a negative..its positive energy..

its negative energy for someone to respond back that wendy and lisa suck.

but i know you know that. your just trying to be a smart ass now arent you? rolleyes

Why don't those people sue instead of wasting their time on a message board complaining?

Why does Morris keep working with P if feels so ripped off? Was Morris not aware after the first Time CD that the bulk of the profits would be going to Prince.

"its negative energy for someone to respond back that wendy and lisa suck."

It is called an opinion.

I think they were responsible for some of the drop in sales. P is responsible as well he let them do a lot of the work on those two CD's.

I think W&L are talented as side people. I by know means think they are at P's level as showman or having a grasp on popular music. Maybe they don't want to have grasp on popular music. Let's be honest their post P work has not exactly flown off the music store racks. Sales are not everything but at some point you do have sale records and if you don't over a long period of time maybe the public is not feeling your music.

You guys bitch the Musicology is so awful but let's be honest it is a nice safe pop record and if P gave some of those songs to other artist everybody would be raving about how great they are.

P does his non-commercial stuff i.e NEWS and TRC and people bitch he puts out something commercial people bitch. Failing to realize that he knows how to play the music game. Sell some records and still maintain some integrity as an artist.

lol.. i think ur being selective - picking out a 10 year segment, and it would be to assume that over that whole 10 years prince did all his expression without music and didn't release any music whatsoever - which is obviously not true... i said 'over the whole course' it 'would be fair to say' that he has done 'most' of his expression through music. - thats not selective in the slightest.. thats encompassing

well, okay then, but i think it's unfair to point to W&L (or Prince for hanging with W&L) as being the sole reason for the drop in sales post-Purple Rain. A large reason for the drop in sales was that neither ATWIAD nor Parade were musically "other Purple Rains". And in terms of quality, ATWIAD and Parade are right up there among his best.

musicology is a nice, safe pop record, you're right. i doubt that people would be raving about the tunes if they'd gone elsewhere, though. it's hard to say - sometimes other people do prince's songs better than he does himself.

won't catch me bitching about TRC. wink lyrically, it's irritating at times (and offensive at times) but musically it's totally outstanding on the whole.

but i agree to some extent - W&L certainly don't make the world go around. But they did have a hand in some of the greatest music our little fella's ever released.

I agree AWIAD and Parade are not PR's but to go from 14 million copies to 3 mill and 1 mill is ridculous.

As far the the musicology songs not during well for others. I would not be surprised if somewhere down the road someone does'nt cover something off of that CD and it does quite well. At this point the issue is not the music the issue is Prince and the blackballing he receives from the industry.

And yes W&L did have a hand in some of P's best music. I don't think he has every attacked them as artist. I just don't think the world came to a end when they left.

I couldn't have said that any better if I tried.
I mean, who would you have to edit Prince's output...and I do agree that he could've used some editing-especially in the late 90's. But who do you put next to the man in the studio to say 'I don't know if it works man'--maybe George Clinton or a younger Sly Stone, can't think of anyone else on his same level of output and brilliance.
