Really every guitar player does that when they are playing. My husband plays guitar, so I've seen it a lot. I asked him why he does that, and he isn't even aware of it. I think it is the guitar player mimicking the sounds the guitar makes.

not ALL guitar players make the funky face. zappa never made that face, even when he was ripping through some solos that would more than rival some of prince's better solos. i think prince looks just fine the way he plays guitar - it seems pretty clear that he's putting his whole body and all his energy into it - but there are some guys out there who really don't need to be making those faces until they get the chops to match.

it's all part and parcel of his showmanship. same with him hitting the high notes on the guitar - he bends over and practically brings the guitar up to his neck. it looks great, i think. just so...enthusiastic.

Now people *cracks knuckles* im back, and things are gonna change in here. I'm working on a FAQ for the gallery, and there will be a number of changes implemented over the coming weeks.
However, one of these first changes is how pictures are posted here on the org. One of the original prime goals of the gallery was to cut down on thread loading times by utilising a thumbnail interface, therefore preventing people with dial up having to suffer for your hi-res fix. If you want the bigger version and info - click it. If u want the pic - have a root thru the extensive gallery (era pix are currently lumped in with related tour sections) Trust me, most of the times what u are after will be there, if not - something damned close. It ain't brain surgery. Time and time again I see people misusing the org gallery by directly linking to pictures (thereby bypassing all the info I have spent time digging up and typing up) and flagrantly using and abusing other people's bandwidth by hotlinking to photos hosted on their site (are u paying attention rudeboynpg? ...and u AndyKeen!) A prime example of this being poor ol' Vashti's Purplehouse site. Like the Org, like HQ, like Purplehouse we all put a lot of time, love, and effort into making our sites and galleries the best they can possibly be - for YOUR enjoyment. God only knows how many times i've been still up at 2:30am (quite often on a work nite!) updating the gallery or adding new, more in-depth info to a series of photos in the gallery, only to be disheartened to see someone come along and completely bypass all that hard work by linking directly to the image. So in a nutshell, abuse it in future and run the risk of my wrath, I really can't s-p-e-l-l i-t o-u-t any simpler. Either utlise the org gallery properly or if u must show a photo from another site - use your OWN bandwidth or a dedicated server such as Photobucket and give credit where credit is due and/or a link to that person's site while you are at it, as there may be newbies reading a thread who do not even know of a lot of other sites - so use your brain, think ahead. In future, I will be taking no prisoners where these simple guidelines are flagrantly ignored. Use it properly - or lose it, your choice. Thankyou. 'nana

'nana Agreed Speaking as someone who's stuck in dial-up hell, threads full of big, pretty pictures are a pain in the ass! I *know* I can't be the only one in this situation. Back when I had broadband, I didn't notice stuff like that much. But now there have been times when my connection timed out while waiting for stuff to load.

Just last week I was talking to a fellow Prince afficionado at work and she commented on the NAACP performance. "It was good, but what the hell is up with the faces he was making when he was playing the guitar?"
I was surprised at the comment as she is a long time Prince follower and asked her if she had never noticed that before because he has done it for so long that it has been deemed "The Funk Face." She said she'd noticed it before, but thought it was exessive during the performance and detracted from it. Go figure. Different strokes for different folks I supose I'm firmly planted in denial

when it comes to Prince's mouth movements during guitar-solo's i think its a sign that he throws a lot of HIMSELVE into the music, he's playing from his SOUL
I mean: - Look at Joe Cockers 'spastic movements' during singing; - Pete Townshends (The Who) jumpkicks during soloing; - Michael Stipes (REM) closing his eyes / moving up his eyeballs while he's singing certain phrases; For me these are just (sometimes spinechilling) signs of musicians expressing SOUL trough music
