"Hard Life" short film by Prince... WTF?!?

I just finished watching the 14-minute short film and all I can say is that this flick makes "Graffiti Bridge" look like a piece of high-end art eek

WTF was Prince thinking when he made this lil' ditty of a film? hmm

i have no flippin' idea. i liked the credits, though. they were very art school student-y. lol

i think it was kinda sorta meant to be a promo film for madhouse, but it also just kinda looks like something he slapped together for fun to play at parties and whatnot.

i just appreciate it as a curiosity - it's cool to see footage of madhouse and jill, and to see a bit of papa nelson.

Wow! No further feedback or is the film just not something that too many people have viewed? eek

Gotta admit that Jill Jones' role in the film made it worth my time even if it wasn't the greatest piece of art out there. wink

Come on...didn't we all make pictures or movies for fun. Nothing to it.
Don't overanalyse eveything.

I thought "analyzing" the hell out of Prince's work was a prerequisite for being a fan lol

"The Vault" produced by Uptown provides the following (edited) summary:

Listed under "Unreleased Film and Video Projects"

"Filmed from March 27th to 30th 1987, this 14-minute film was shot using a local camera team. The full title is "A Twisted Tale About Two Bums Living The... Hard Life." It uses tracks from Madhouse's 8 as the theme music but was never intended as an extended video clip or a promotional vehicle for the group. In fact, there was no practical use whatsoever for the film. Most scenes were filmed in the Washington Avenue rehearsal warehouse. The roles were played by Wally Safford, Greg Brooks, Cat, Jill Jones, Miko Weaver, Eric Leeds, and Matt Fink's mother. Prince's father, John L. Nelson, also makes an appearance. Prince didn't act in the film, which is credited as being "misdirected by Prince."

There's more plot info given but I think you get the idea.

I think we can discuss "unreleased" work but are not allowed per the rules of the board to explain how to obtain them. The Mods would need to bless that discussion.

Sorry... hate to be coy confused

Maybe you are a newbie but, Prince did say on his interview with Oprah that "the violence in his home was much worst than what you could show in a movie" or something along those lines.

It is obvious that P comes from a home with domestic violence. That is why it keeps poping up in his work.

True, however this particular scene is played as if it was meant for laughs which is very odd to me. eek
