So which band did Billy get rid of in Purple Rain It must have been the Modernaires. I think he was secretly trying to get rid of them all along and used the feud between Morris and Prince as an cover.

I thought they were singing "I want to be a Mountaineer", good song though , were they a real-life-outside-of-the-purple-rain-band too? Or were they just for the film? I recognised Dez. No Freestyling.

The Modernaires were Dez's band as he went solo AFTER Purple Rain (with Prince's blessing)..they recorded alot of stuff....toured with Billy Idol and solo and NEVER recorded an album

Bearing in mind that a Warner's rep wasn't in the audience that night to immediately sign the Revolution up, I think the band that would have been dropped would have been Appolonia 6. Sure they got a huge response the night they first performed but a lot of that was due to their visual representations of their breastal region. Billy, who was many things but was not tone deaf, had to realize that the girls had not talent in the singing department but would be great at the strip club he owned down the street. So he would have whisked them off and have his three bands intact for awhile, eventually firing the Modernaires for lack of creativity, i.e. not having any songs in their catalogue without the word "modernaire" in it. He replaced The Modernaires with a number of acts (Mazarati, The Family, etc.) before deciding to just have The Revolution (later the NPG) and the Time battle each other every night. One sad night, Billy was peeing and overheard TC Ellis rapping in a bathroom stall. The rap was so godawful that Billy began laughing uproariously, which caused him to go into cardiac arrest. Despite efforts by Monte Moir and George Clinton to save him, Billy passed on and the rest is history. The Time got all the clubs except for the Glam Slam (hard to explain how that happened except to say it had something to do with Robin Power, a jar of honey, and a jackhammer) and the Kid met an angel who became a feather. All good things they say never last...

The poor Modernaires!
Well, at least we got to hear the stuff now, Dez's 2CD set is brilliant. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

It was obviously The Jackson 5 that got dropped. Poor Michael...I bet he was never the same and grew up to be a weirdo. Desire, it covers our faces

That part of the script was SO contrived. I mean, really, after hearing The Time, Appollonia 6 and The Rev, who in their right mind wouldn't have ditched the Modernaires? The movie woulda been over 20 minutes earlier! Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I brought that up once in a forum discussion. I thought that's what he was saying for the longest time and I was like, "Why? It makes no sense." Don't feel too bad lol. Haha, i actually thought it made sense cause it was the craaazy 80's were they sang about random things and it was Prince i mean the guy wrote a song called Mountains later on so why not...maybe it was a new crazy trend for climbing mountains or a metaphor for always aiming high...and the dance was almost as if the audience were climbing... * and that kids, is how my brain thinks* No Freestyling.

Clearly they got rid of Prince, because after that night his ego was so big he thought everything he did was great, and the next day he came out with Temptation, returning to shit that nobody understood but him.
Apollonia 6 went on to dominate the music scene for 20 years, inspiring such great bands as Bananarama, Mystique, Sugar Babes and the Beastie Boys. [Edited 4/20/05 11:50am]

[Edited 4/20/05 11:50am] Let's not forget how Apollonia had to forge ahead when Brenda and Susan left the fold back in October of '86. This of course caused Apollonia to reexamine the direction of her music and shelve the soon to be released Apollonia 6 album "Cream Factory". Such groups as Bananarama, Spice Girls, and The Donnas owe much to Apollonia and the NPG's (Nasty Panty Girls) ever-evolving musical style.

Is that the actual treatment for the upcoming Graffiti Bridge prequel - Purple Rain Episode II: the Death of Billy?

So long, Modernaires. That song in PR is SHIT. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

And what exactly did being a "Modernaire" consist of? Were there classes you had to take? A certificate? A contest? Was their rivals the "Antiquenaires?" Desire, it covers our faces
