In the early 80's 1999 & Controversy
Mid 80's : Parade,Black Album and some tunes from SOTT &... Lovesexy(the song) IS FUNKY!! Some of Gold Xperience IMO his latest albums are very funky,in a more mellow and different way... Like somebody already said;can't compare all those different sounds with each other because they all came out in a different time. I guess 1999 and Parade are his most funky work Love4oneanother

1999 is Pop??? No, its Princely dance music, most People in here seem to consider this his best Funk album, i dont necessarily disagree, but in my opinion 1999 is Prince's attempt to create an original dance-cd which incorporates not only the 'usual' Funk influences (JB, Sly), but you can also hear influences by Kraftwerk (the beat on Lets Pretend Were Married), Gary Numan (Automatic), early electropop (All the critics...), and apart from that, new-wave rockabilly (delirious), FM Rock (Little Red Corvette) and Gospel (Free).
So, 1999 is a great, diverse (dance)record in my opinion, but when i have to go for the real FUNK records i either go for the collected Camille-tracks or The Black Album (recently i am 'jamming' on The Grind and Superfunkycaligrafisex again, and that is the quintessentional Funk-sound of Prince i enjoy the most)

1999----This lp made him not just a Star but a Superstar. Then he came with a watered down version for the masses called Purple Rain.
1999 was funky and his most adventurous and innovative!
