Some of these are picked because you are "supposed" to love them, not that they are great.

The list seems to confuse what is classic, with what was "big at the time".

Couldn't agree more. You just gotta look at Exile on Main Street. Nearly every stones fan i talk to say its not as good as its reputation suggests. Even Mick Jagger thinks is far far overpraised. Basically it's music critic conformity. They probably all secretly think another album is better but they won't vote for it because they think no one else will, so they vote for the most common denominator. That's why i guess every best of list is so dull and predictable.

why?....there is no doubt it is one of the finest albums ever made....brian wilson was a musicial genius....it would certainly be in my top ten albums.

That's just it-- YOUR top ten. It's all opinion. What you call genius I call tolerable. The Beach Boys, Nirvana and even the Beatles and Marvin Gaye for that matter are way overrated in my book. If Dylan, Hendrix, or Stevie topped the list I wouldn't have a problem with it, but c'mon-- there's nothing lyrically or musically spectacular going on in most of these albums. Enjoyable sure. I don't want to hear anything about context-- either it holds up now or it doesn't.
If I had the resources and nothing better to do I could publish my list and I bet you maybe 10 of those albums would make it-- MAYBE.
For the record, I think they overrated Sign O the Times too. Slightly wink

By the way, Dylan is 7 and 12. The list is quite good, although I disagree with most of it, one must not forget that it is a poll, and as far as Pop and Rock goes, consensus is impossible.

Simply put, that record belongs in the top 20, period.....

The Funny thing is, by the way, that i always see Van Morrisons Astral Weeks in there, while he has released much better cd's....weird
