Why didn't Prince show up 4 the We Are The World tribute ?

Every great star from the eighties was in that video except Prince & Madonna, does anybody know what went down and why Prince didn't show up 4 the we are the world video ? Is that the reason why Quincy Jones never cared 4 Prince ?
John 3:16-20 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son,that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

Madonna performed at Live Aid. Prince was on the We are The World album. Quite frankly Prince was an asshole back then. Quincy had P on stage 10 years later and P was sucking a lollypop. Watch the MTV interview from 85 and you'll figure out why everyone thought he ass was crazy. 85-86, my least fav P years.

Prince chose not to attend the recording of "We Are The World" to benefit the starving masses in Ethiopia. Prince went partying instead, and watched as his bodyguards beat up some photographers who had the audacity to take a picture of the star.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

He didn't go which was a scam, But I'm pretty sure he did write a song for it.

He gave them 4 The Tears In Your Eyes and offered Raspberry Beret as well.

It probably didn't do his celebrity profile any good at the time, but it was a very pompous event, and the songs lyrics were hideous in it's smug sentiment.

Although, I'm certainly not saying that was Prince's reason for not attending.

He made out some shit about being "intimidated" by all the great, legendary names.

The truth is his ego wouldn't allow singing a song written by Michael Jackson.

With respect, If I was him I wouldn't have gone either. I would have given an obligitory donation to the charity and a song for their album (maybe). He mnde a video also with wendy.

U can't be upset for him not going there. It is like being upset that your friend didn't buy the album.

Being a star and forced to participate in projects or anything is not cool.

While I am thinking of it ...

Why was Dan Ackroyd part of the singing lineup. That's just wrong! razz

Prince standing next to Dan, swaying back and forth. "We are the Worrrld .."

Charity records may not exactly be cutting edge, but get over yourself already....

It wasn't about the music anyway!

(Even though I liked the record).

Listen 2 the song "Hello", it pretty much explains everything. I don't doubt that his ego played a part but I also don't doubt that he would've clammed up much like what he did back when he was on stage with James Brown and MJ. And as far as his bodyguards beating up a photographer, it wasn't so much the picture, it was that the photographer hopped in his limo 2 get the shot.

Hello Hello Hello Hello

Hello Hello Hello Hello

I tried 2 tell them that I didn't want 2 sing talk to the hand
But I'd gladly write a song instead
They said okay and everything was cool
'Til a camera tried 2 get in my bed

Hello My bed Hello Hello

I was sittin' pretty with a beautiful friend ("Oh darling")
When this man tries 2 get in the car
("'Ey Prince, c'mon, give us a smile eh?")
No introduction, "How U been?"
Just "Up yours, smile, that's right, you're a star!" (Star) lips

U call 'em bodyguards but I call 'em my friends
I guess I'm used 2 havin' 'em around
And cameras by nature like rewards
That's the trouble I get when I'm Uptown

I'm not afraid to die (Don't be afraid)
Oh no, there's a better place ('Cuz there's a better place 2 go)
I eat what I want (U can eat what U want)
Whole wheat toast (Anything is cool in moderation) toaster
And I'm happy, and that's for sure

We're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand
A flower that has water will grow rose
And the child misunderstood will go

Hello

Hello

Everybody we're against hungry children
Our record stands tall
There's just as much hunger here at home

We'll do what we can
If y'all try and understand
A flower that has water will grow
And the child misunderstood will go

Our record stands tall, u know
Give us time and love will show dove

Prince did his part by giving a song for the album and I'm glad he didn't participate on the song "We Are The World". That would go completely against his rebel image. Prince was a real "bitch" back then. He was wild, outrageous, conceited, over the top, and far from down to earth and I absolutely loved him for it.

Ur welcome Ocean, btw... the line "We're against hungry children, our record stands tall, there's just as much hunger here at home" refers 2 the food drive Prince would have at his concerts back then (canned and boxed food goods). But of course the tabloids left that out. hmmm
Prince really wasn't as bad as the tabloids made him seem. He also gave a benefit concert at Lehman (sp?) College in the Bronx, NY back in '85. And I'm sure most every1 knows about his donations 2 Marva Collins school.

The whole We Are The World event was just one big ego massage. Wasn't The catering bill for that recording session something like $75,000? Fucking hypocrites.

As an individualist, I detest doing things in herds.

Prince seems to be an individualist too, so I'm sure he's loathe to sing in crowds.

There's more than one way to help Africa.

His one song was better than that patch-quilt, over-the-top "We Are the World."

All the random stars. It looked like a circus.

In 1985,Prince was basking in the success of "Purple Rain".The movie, the soundtrack, and the tour made him an international superstar."We are the world"was produced and composed by Quincy Jones,Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie. They ran the show at the recording session.Prince is most comfortable in an environment under his control. To be a supporting player in a project of that magnitude would remove Prince from his comfort zone. When Prince is in an uncomfortable situation,he creates substandard product.Looking back,I think most will agree he made the right decision.

How come nobody mentions that David Lee Roth laughed and hung up the phone? Barbara Streisand also didn´t attend and no song from her either. There were many other no-shows this was MJ´s peeps looking for an advantage. Paying the price today aren´t we Mike? Karma is a bitch!

Without reading the other responses...I think he was kind of like a dick back then? That was when he drank his own bath water. I remember hearing he was invited.

Does anyone know why Jermaine Jackson was missing?...Oh, probably because he didn't have any lead vocals or something. lol
