I didn't say "funky", I said "funk". Yeah, sure - many of the cuts on "The Black Album" probably have a more infectuous groove than "Prettyman" does varying from listener to listener. However, whenever an expression such as "true" is used in conjunction with a musical genre, especially in a denotative sense (as in calling something a bit more left-of-the-field "TR000" or whatever) the alarm bells should be already ringing.

In my opinion, when people are listening to the radio and hear Prince doing some track in the JB-vain, they think, hey, this sounds quite funky, but they will never feel dared to find out who they were listening to, let alone 'buy it'.
I mean, i really think Prince makes the most impact with funk tracks that are original, have something 'special', some sparkle that makes you think: Hey, this is some original, funky track, lets find out who it is. Some examples: - Automatic - Erotic City - Girls and Boys - U got the Look - Lovesexy - Billy Jack Bitch - I rock, therefore i am

MJ fans, aren't they so lovely when explicating on the essence of true funk... Gotta love'em. [Edited 4/11/05 1:28am] Ummm.....since u havent heard Jackson 5's "Git It Together" "Dancin Machine" the first 3 albums, plus "Looking Through The Windows" and tell me that they aint got no funk in it (b4 Prince was funkin it big time anyway) then u aint got no more 2 say. Tell me "Shake Ya Body.." aint funky!!! Tell me "Workin Day & Night" aint funk! MJ's been funkin it up for many years b4 Prince, though he may not have been after Thriller but man, dont u dare say MJ never funked it up b4 with the brothers Michael show me "How Funky Is Yo Chicken" from 'Third Album' [Edited 4/12/05 11:02am] Straight Jacket Funk Affair

The "genius" that was left unreleased, let's face it, because it was quite substandard compared to his output from the previous years. "Dead On It" was just as embarrassing now as it was first when Prince was still playing it back straight out of the preamps of his console. Sure, "The Black Album" might be cooler than anything Prince put out in the 90s or maybe anything he put out after making it, I just detest that people associate "coolness" so outrightly with plain silly childishness. Looks like someone totally missed the point of that song. It's supposed to sound the way it does. It's a funny jab at rap. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Without being a surprise, I don't think it would have made as big of an impression. So much of its charm comes from being a joke and a secret. I agree! I totally loved the surprise factor of it!

nothing before Black ALbum was better in my opinion, and, nothing since, it is still my favorite prince album. I only really took notice of prince as an artist as opposed to a pop star, and was inspired to start producing music and sound effects after I heard the BLack ALbum. It remains the most cohesive and solid song sequence he has put out, and Bob George alone creatively strips away other stuff he's done (He is painting a bare bones focussed narrative, in the voice of another character, and manages to self deprecate all over himself). It is simply sick in a good way. As a concept with its simple peach and black fonts with no name, no artist mentioned... it is simply brilliant and deep. sometimes the best art comes out of negative emotions. This was when we had "Like A Prayer" or "Bad" as to compare what the other superstars were doing. Prince was and is still a creative force that makes me drop my jaw. and I really think the Black ALbum is a peak so far.
