Where do u think princes style came from?

i say rick james.he was the original controversal one wearing tight leather making punk funk music when it was strictly r&b.he had the sexual lyrics and u wondered if he was gay by his album covers and attitude but somehow u had a feeling he was a ladiesman.he also dated vanity first and i think appolonia also.

Hmmm, I know that Prince has said that his musical influences were Jimi Hendrix, Sly Stone, and Santana, so I kind of think it would be perhaps a mixture of those three artists (but don't quote me on that). biggrin
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Rick James?? You must be really young , Rick ain't nothing but a Sly Stone/P-Funk clone. There were lot of black acts doing that type of stuff before Prince. James Brown had a lot of sexual songs like Sex Machine, Lickin' Stick as well as Ohio Players having naked women on lp covers and many sexually suggestive tunes like Sweet Sticky Thang , Fopp etc. As for as being blatant it came from P-Funk. George , Bootsy and the Mob had many sexually lewd tunes. The rappers of course have taken all that to the next level. Hell I can play Dirty Mind for my mom and feel safe compared to some of the rap stuff.

i think what they are saying is his stage presence live came from james brown(the dancing, band directing, and etc...)was alot of james brown influence before purple rain.musically sly stone and jimi hendrix and little richard definitely.rick james and prince were going after the same crowd back then with the shock tactics..i wouldn't say prince was influenced by rick...but i know he competed with him to show he was better.

Prince's style came from James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Carlos Santana. I have seen James and Carlos live and you can see plain and clear that Prince has studied their styles and with Jimi, just look at old footage and you can see it. Prince just took their styles to a new level and created his own from theirs.

It's not just that. James Brown is the Father of Funk. Anybody playing Funk is essentially influenced by James Brown - BUT, that's not the whole thing in a nutshell.

Songs like "Housequake," "The Work," "Kiss," "SexyMF," "Get Off" and others have a direct James Brown influence. There is NO getting past it.

Sometimes Prince uses the 1 & 3 accented beats instead of the 2 & 4 which was traditional prior to JB and his band. Listen to the horn patterns on "The Work", listen to the intro of rhythm guitar on "Kiss"...and if you're familiar with James Brown's catalog it's easily deciphered where the percussive-like effects (with non-percussion instruments) started. James Brown's influence on Prince is WORLD'S more visceral than any Rick James influence could ever be.

The main things that Prince seemed to have in common with Rick is a rebel attitude, and double entendre lyrics - neither of which Rick James originated. Musically, they have little in common. When it comes to aesthetics, flamboyance, and musical amalgamations, Prince has MUCH more in common with David Bowie.

1. I haven't "attacked" you.

2. I never said a word about your spelling. Seems like you should take your advice and be consistent.

3. "Over my head"? LOL I make a living at it. Try again and get back to me when you have something of substance to engage me with.

U say Rick James...Interesting I don't think so at all. Rick was good 4 what he brought 2 the table. But in terms of X-rated subject matter of the kinky nasty blunt kind... he had nothing on Prince. If U look at the past & how they performed these songs in concert, you'll see Prince gave U a far more shocking or erotic visual effect that brought another element 2 those songs live. Thats all the proof I need.

Speaking of Rick James,I remember the nasty feud that he and Prince were having in the early 80s.I would read interviews in Right On and Black Beat magazines where James would spend alot of time dissing Prince."He's mentally disturbed. He's out to lunch. You can't take his songs seriously",insisted James."I mean,he does songs about oral sex and incest".Later,James said that Prince stole his idea for a sexy girl group."They suck big oranges",said James, when speaking of Vanity 6."My own Mary Jane Girls are gonna sing rings around them".

In 1982,there was talk that James was gonna make a movie based on his life. The planned film was titled 'Spice Of Life' but it never got off the ground. In 1984,of course,Prince beat him to the punch with "Purple Rain".A year later,James made a music video "Glow" that looked suspiciously like "Purple Rain"."He's doggin us",said Sheila E."Those ruffles were ours, and his videos look just like 'Purple Rain'!".

For a few years,P and Rick were really competing against each other.

finally some1 who know some of the history.yeah prince is a far better musician, but he was influenced.while the mary jane girls COULD sing rings around vanity six, nothing ever came close 2 the monsterous sucess of nasty girl.prince took
vanity from rick.wonder if that morris/appolonia scene is a poke at rick.u can sing and dance can't u?????

Wouldn't it be cool to go through Prince's personal record collection? I have heard him mentioned that he likes Stevie Wonder, Sly, and Luther.

Prince's number one influence is his personal genius.
