Can't possibly complain about seeing Prince perform for FREE, so I'll say it was great. He seemed loose and happy and it was cool to see Prince playing keyboards during "The Bird" and singing backup on "The Glamorous Life."
I wonder if this is the end of the NPG core of players circa 2001-present (i.e. John Blackwell, Rhonda Smith, Renato, Greg Boyer)? Check out The Mountains and the Sea, a Prince podcast by yours truly and my wife. More info at https://www.facebook.com/TMATSPodcast/

what, they were supposed to make this big show of affection or something? a friendly embrace is cool, i ain't gotta see 'em hugged up on each other to know that they appreciate each other's company/work. a freindly embrace is cool, it didnt even look like that, it looked like some tension, rewind the tape, watch Sheila

Okay...done in Colorado...it was awesome to see Prince and the others...I would have liked more music from him but I am guessing (JUST guessing) there was a message...him giving back...acknowledging others, by the choice of Sheila E and Co. and the choices of songs...montage of oldies, blues, new, Prince vintage, etc.
I thought he looked fantastic and ready to take us on another ride...this year. LOVED the new song...cannot wait! On another note Prince DID win "Outstanding Album" (Musicology over Confessions, Dana Owens, College Dropout, and Destiny Fulflled) from the NAACP but it was NOT televised. Here is the link...scroll down on the left! http://www.naacpimageawar...inees.html Finally, I am pleased to be a fan. I wished I had not missed the late 80's and early 90's like I did but I certainly plan to make up for it. I enjoy watching others watch him and him enjoying playing no matter the circumstance. Cornell said it best...Prince, Prince, Prince!

It was all about the performance and Prince didn't disappoint...seriously, I haven't been this geeked to see a televised performance since Motown 25!

Hardcore fans may not have loved it but I think a lot of casual fans really enjoyed and appreciated it. I post on another board and everyone that posted about the performance, loved it. Some even suggested that someone call Ashanti, Ciara and Beyonce so that they could see a real musician in action. Oh yeah, someone also mentioned that there was no backing track during the whole performance. I think his mission was accomplished. [Edited 3/25/05 21:56pm]

Come on- how can you not appreciate this??? No, it didn't blow my mind, but it was like a mini Prince concert complete with opening act in 10 minutes. You get to see Prince playing keyboard, bass, guitar, dancing, and singing (and man, talk about some soulful singing- listen to that new song!) You get some old, some new, some borrowed, etc.
The new song ("Satisfy") reminds of "The One". An excellent old school soul ballad (even better than "Call My Name"?) Sheila E. was awesome on "The Glamorous Life" and it was also cool just to watch Prince sing backup on it. And the somewhat latin jam that followed it to close the performance was sizzling!!! Prince probably saw this as an opportunity to share the spotlight with people who've helped him along the way (Sheila E., playing "The Jam" by Larry Graham, and Morris and Jerome). It was a nice touch, and the audience there appreciated seeing the others. It was about as good as you're gonna get from a medley style performance.

I watched in while visiting someone in the hospital saw I didn't get the full, stereo, big screen effect (I'm Taping it at home) but..... it was Awesome!
I was lucky enough to be at the last night of Musicology in NY at MSG when Sheila made a surprise performance to close the 1st half of the show. This was kind of like that..... and now the country (at least those watching the show) got to see Sheila for the amazing talent she is. That night at MSG the audience went WILD for her..... more than for Prince. It makes perfect sense her solo spot closed the performance tonight. It was great to seet hem together again onstage I don't know who most of those other guest singers were.... (the guy at the keyboard? The young woman who sang a classic soul song?) And yeah a lot of the band were from Sheila's band. WHich is not a surprise either. Many of Prince's band members over the years have come from her....dating all the way back to Mico Weaver and in a way Eric Leeds (he auditioned for her but she had already hired Eddie). Ditto for Boni Boyer, Kat Dyson, Greg Boyer etc.

I was just NOT feeling this performance at all!!! Way too sedate for my taste!! What was up with the 2 or 3 slow numbers (with an almost Vegas-style band), immediately bringing down the already lackluster energy there was from "D.M.S.R."? Too many horns make things sound "schmaltzy" and makes it lack that raw, gritty type feel. I've always felt he only needs 2-3 horn players on stage TOPS (yes, the Hornheads were sometimes overkill!). I guess Prince does too much standing around and posing for my taste these days. "Housequake" should've been an absolutely funky ass performance, but instead it was just there. He barely even did the actual Housequake dance, and when he did, it lacked energy. Too much Frankie (& that other lady whose name escapes me right now), as well. Prince could've easily slapped in a few lines of "International Lover" or something (since they wanted to slow it down) in that slot (hey, I can dream, can't I?)! Sheila was more animated and, for my money, more exciting than Prince tonight. She stole the show from him yet again, just like before when they performed "Everlasting Now" on Leno a couple of years ago. It was good seeing Morris & Jerome again, I will say. I would've preferred "Jungle Love" to "The Bird", but that's just me. "Glamorous Life" rocked though, but that's Sheila for ya!!
I'm guessing he was going with a Minneapolis Sound tribute/grooves-or-older-artists-that-inspired-me type performance (it WAS nice to hear JB's "I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothin'...", but it suffered from the same thing "Housequake" and "D.M.S.R." did; being too damn Vegas-y) but there were just too many players on that stage for it to have been executed well. The band left even die-hards wondering who the fuck were these people. And, if that song about "Foreplay starts with the mind" is his new song "3121" (or whatever it's called), then there goes my enthusiasm for the new album. He's still stuck in the slow to mid-tempo wanna-be jazz/soul rut that lacks any type of punch. Sorry if this posts sounds so negative, but after being hyped all week long and hearing that "Housequake" was being performed with Sheila in tow and how funky it was all supposed to be, this didn't even come close to what I envisioned. That seems to be a recurring theme these days with Prince for me, I see. He's too polished these days...the hunger's just not there anymore today, regardless of what anyone says. His music lacks the passion and energy it once had, back when he probably felt he had things to prove and new paths to tread. [Edited 3/25/05 22:52pm]
