If I see one more complaint about "boring and stale"  There's a bunch of you who just discovered Prince last fucking week and keep comparing his recent performances to your freshly purchased copies of Sign O the Times and Purple Rain live. When you reach a certain age, your body begins to make you aware of shit that it can't do anymore.
A bunch of youz keep missing the main points: This performance was intended for a mature black audience. Whatever kind of funk he brought to the table, it had to be done with a certain level of class. To take another quote from NuPowerSoul, "You are not stockholders," you are music consumers. Prince doesn't owe you a Gotdamn thing. It's not Prince who owes you better, maybe you owe it to yourselves to find something better. As tiring as it gets running through the circles of ass-kissers and naysayers, it's really time for everyone to shut the fuck up and just let old maturing Prince be old maturing Prince. He's not young and hungry anymore. It's time to accept the fact that if you haven't been satisfied with the music, then he's probably not going to satisfy you anymore. Whatever hope you have of Prince recapturing a "golden era", let it go: It ain't gonna happen. If you're tired of the old-soul revue (which technically started with the '86 Hit & Run tours with your beloved Wendy & Lisa), take it upon yourself to find something better. It's always great to see Prince and Stevie perform live, but this just wasn't their best stuff. Every time I see Stevie on TV now, I know the curtain's gonna open to reveal a choir. It's always over the top, and now Prince is doing the same thing.. I can get overproduced "numbers" from Alicia Keys and Usher, thank you very much. Sometimes you need the bombast to hide the fact you cant really sing or play. I would like to see Prince and Stevie "break it down" and give these TV performances the same dazzle as the aftershows or the stuff you have to dig deep to find, the real genius.. Let Stevie perform "Lately" without a choir, have Prince play "Sign o the Times" acoustic, somethin cool, original and not so overblown and predictable.. ______________________________________________

People need to move the hell on if they are not feeling the 'soul' direction he is going. I dropped his ass like a bad habit in '86, after being a fan for six years(first concert was the Rick James/Prince Tour) because I was no longer feeling him. I 're-discovered' P in 2004 and I am having the time of my life. Before I saw P 4 times last year on the Musicology Tour it had been 20 years since I had last seen him(PR Tour). I feel like a new fan. Maybe that's what people need to do. Find someone else that intrest them more and check back in a few years to see if P is offering something to their liking because it really makes no sense to bitch and moan about every freaking thing his does. | |

And I, like many of the others, never said Prince owed us a thing. Why is it when someone dosn't like something he does, the first thing out of someone's mouth is, "He doesn't owe you anything."?? No one said he did; we're just voicing our opinions. In no one's post was it even insinuated that we're saying, "He OWES us to do this or that..." Nope. All we say is it would've ben nice if he did this or that... So, half of your lecture doesn't apply to pretty much anyone on this thread. No one even said to eliminate a damn horn section!! I just merely said that having 10 (an exaggeration, of course) horn players up there can make a lot of Prince jams sound cheesey or schmaltzy. You don't think so? That's great. That's your opnion. Mine is that it does, and as I've stated in this or another thread, one of my favorite tours of ALL time is Prince 86 Hit N Run tour, the Soul Revue type show (hell, my fav versions of his bands include Eric on sax/flute, Atlanta on trumpet, and sometimes Eddie M on another sax, so I damn sure didn't say I wanted him to eliminate horns from his shows!!). Now back then, he was really puttin' in some "soul" into his show  ! These days, it just looks like he phones it in, and I think a lot of that has to do with the hunger he has, or lack thereof, left for music. And who could blame him if he's lost a lot of it? Everybody's kissing his feet these days, he's done SO much in music as it is, he's been in this business for 27 damn years, etc... Who wouldn't get bored with something after all of that time and involvement in between? I'm just saying (which is MY opinion, & the last time I checked I was entitled to it without persecution from ANYONE else) this awards show performance didn't embody what a Prince performance is signaturally all about, though it did with the music selection (since it hit on the stuff that influenced HIM and things he's done in his career)! | |

Just one question. You mentioned the name of the young lady who sang being Ashley Davis. I'm sure I've never seen her perform before. Is she in someone elses band? The name sounds familiar but I just can't quite place where I've heard it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I just watched this piece of shit performance and my eyes and ears are still bleeding. I knew once he mentioned that Jehova crap, it was all over. I needed a third cup of coffee to get through that catastrophy. The only thing worth a damn was Prince's guitar solo with Sheila at the end. Everything else was trash.
