cool The show wuz boring as always. I should have just tune in for the last 30 minutes. Prince & Sheila E. made up for the last hour & a half of babbling & non funny jokes told. I will say Prince was not great but he did put on a good performance. How long will Morris Day & Jerome continue to run that played out gimmick. Who? What? & Why? did he give a solo to those 2 singers (musicians) whatever. I did like the version of DMSR. He should have done that little longer.

I can't believe I just read all these posts & nothing about who the other vocalists were. Prince let 2 unknown people in the band take lead vocals & no one knows who they are?? Thats seems more significant then how Prince hugged Sheila.

you are right!
this kind of reminded me of those awful "new power festival" shows he did in 1998 where he had larry graham and chaka kahn sing most of the songs.
at the show i saw in chicago.prince finally managed to come from behind his keyboard to utter a few words from purple rain sad
i paid $80 to see prince sing:"i never meant to cause you any sorrow"... mad
beyond that, the whole show was sly's greatest hits!WITHOUT SLY!
i was pissed....

It was good. If it's Prince, it can't REALLY suck. Right? biggrin

Medleys: blah. Big-ass brass section laid over every fucking song he ever wrote: blah. Those other people who aren't as good as he is taking up mic time: blah.

And who is that guy petting the keys? Where the fuck is Renato?! fit

But it still always, ALWAYS makes me happy to watch him perform, and the rest of the music on the show was complete and utter crap, so it was good to see him get up and work it.

And he finally wore something other than one of those damn too-big-fo-his-azz suits. woot! He looked good. . .

Side notes: I can't WAIT to vote for Obama for president one of these days, and I love Oprah to death but she was acting/sounding really weird. whofarted

just because some of us thought the performance was boring and lite
doesn't mean that we are "stuck in the 80's",that summary is too easy.
it is quite clear that Prince is really into the soul-music thing right now in his life...that is cool, just not my personal cup o' tea.
i would be a hipocrate and a liar if i posted here and said that this performance moved me or that Prince was at the top of his game.
it neither moved me nor did it prove that anything "revolutionary sounding" is coming.
from the sound of it,be prepared for another soul album.

This wasn't a showcase or a preview of anything. He just performed for the audience in front of him. Lawdy ya'll...shake

Oh..some ppl like soul music...and horns....so I'mma give a shout out to the horn section...woot! Big Up!! Shout out to all the great horn sections....EWF especially smile I think some of ya'll just need to relax until Prince decides when he feels like doing something else. You guys talk about soul music as if its shit. Just appreciate the music fcr what it is and keep it moving.

I'm sure Prince has some other stuff up his sleeve.

It was the content that I liked. For some reason, I felt it...and yes...I was moved by Barak as well. He is an awesome man. I want my daughter to read his book.

Was expecting a car-crash of a performance after reading some of the rants on this thread , but just watched it on HQ and it was an excellent medley .
Someone else said it earlier , when its Prince performing live its never THAT bad ,
as a live act even his worst performances are still excellent , some of you are just hating for nothing again . On record I dont love everything he does and can be critical , but on stage , he's still the best , I find it hard to make any negative comments about that TV appearance , great work Prince !!! cool

I dug it. I was dancing in my seat. Until Morris and Jerome came out, and then I was jumping up and down and screaming like a bitch. I agree that they need to come up with some new material, but I never get tired of watching Morris do his thing.

My only complaint about the performance is the backing band. They weren't bad, exactly, but I had really fallen in love with the last version of the NPG, and I don't think this band could really hang with them.

It's a jungle out there.

Let me see if I can sum this up:

Prince won an award for his contributions to music over the last 25 years.

He showed up to accept it.

He played for about 10 minutes rather than give a long acceptance speech.

Out of the huge catalog of music he had to choose from (his own and others') he chose to play some old favorites, some covers of songs from those who influenced his career, and threw in a new tune.

He gave stage time to old friends (Sheila, Jerome, Morris) and new friends (whoever they were).

He sang, played keys, guitar and bass.

Some folks thought he could had done better. Some folks quite liked it.

If you didn't like it, you're entitled to your opinion. Put it aside and move on to other artists and/or wait to see what he releases next.

If you did like it, you're entitled to your opinion. Watch the tape or the internet file to your heart's content and enjoy.

Personally, I thought it was aiight. It didn't blow me away, but it didn't suck. It was fun, varied and I was able to enjoy it for what it was -- a performance on an awards show targeted to an audience that didn't show up solely to see Prince perform. I read the hype about the performance on this board, but I've been around long enough to have learned never to believe the hype. I didn't expect a career-defining moment, I didn't get one, so I'm happy.

One other thing I've learned as a Prince fan is that you take it as it comes. Sometimes he hits and sometimes he misses and what works for one person annoys the hell out of another. Even among his most ardent fans, we can't agree.

So form your own opinion and don't waste time or energy trying to change someone else's.

Yes, some people on this board are stuck in the 80's. That is their choice. Please stay and stop boring everyone on this board with this non-stop complaining.

I have news flash for you soul-music, RnB, and Rap is the pop music of today.
If you have not figured that out yet seek the help you need to get in touch with reality.

It looks like all of his experimental music is going into the music club. (Glass Cutter being an example) This is a good idea since you don't see the public running out and buying anything that is experimental.

Just remember Sign Of The Times is a masterpiece and it only sold about a million copies when it came out.

well, the performance was good as always, but i felt like i didn't see him do enough dancing and way too much walking. We prince fans are spoiled by him...seeing splits, twists and 45 mph spins in the middle of the floor. Now (from the performance last night) he looks as if he is just a composer for his band.

I was getting kind of scared when i didn't see none and mean no one from the NPG playing the background. I hope this was just a one gig type of thing and hopefully he hasn't broken them up yet...

I loved sheila, and morris and jerome (but damn how many times are we gonna hear that damn "The Bird", I would love to hear "777-9311" or "get it up" i'm sure some of the audience members are familiar with those tunes also.

when was the last time you saw prince do splits, twists and 45 mph spins?

Look, i'm just saying what I feel, and what I want and expect from him. I'm entitled to my opinion just like you are. If i want to see him do splits and twists and spins, then thats what the hell i want to see. you have nothing to do with it. talk to the hand
I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

A few quotes from casual fans, mostly in their early 20's, about the performance:

Prince rocked the NAACP awards and that has to be one of the best performances I've ever seen in my life. Having Sheila E., my first latina crush, and Morris Day was brilliant. I didn't even miss Sheena Easton. I literally was glued to the screen during that whole performance like couch.gif If anybody has that saved on their computer, hit me up.

I taped it and about to watch it again.... this was the TRUTH!!! Damn I still have goosebumps. And on top of all that, I saw an old friend of mine in Prince's band! I haven't seen him in about 7 or 8 years!! I'm so happy for him! He's the dude that sang the solo at the piano. Frank McComb. He used to be with Branford Marsalis' Buckshot LeFonque Project.
Sheila looked great!
This was a brilliant performance... I don't care what people say about Prince, he is a musical genius and his true passion for music makes him sexy to me.

That was the best performance. I was like dayum Prince doing a concert. Forget the rest of the boring a** show and just let Prince keep performing. cyclone_cabpatch.gif

If anyone has it, can you please post it on the board. My friend missed the performance and is a huge Prince fan.

I didn't get to see the show last night but i just saw the performance. All I can say is cyclone_jawdrop.gif the performance was amazing. I can't say I've seen a performance as great as what I just saw...wow. Let me not forget Ms. Sheila E...she's the TRUTH

Prince fuckin' RULES!!!!!
@ the Purple One, Morris and Sheila throwin' down like it was the heyday of '86! So glad to see real music on display!

Prince is the man..

Preach on, my sista!! smile In all fairness, I'd rather see what I thought was a lackluster performance by him ANY day over a great performance by today's "hot stuff". But in my OPINION, this just wasn't up to snuff compared to what he capable of doing. Yeah, I know it was an awards show, but like I've said before he's definitely turned it out on awards shows before (and with less time). I thought even last year's Grammy performance was tighter than this one (must be cuz he had his usual backing band with him), and I wasn't too thrilled with that one either.

You are completely entitled to your opinion. We're discussing art, so each individual's response is their own and no one has the right to tell them their opinion is incorrect.

Don't let it get to you, though, when folks on here get up in arms if anyone even hints that Prince is anything but infallible. It is a fan forum afterall and some fans are unable to be at all objective about what he does. You've stated your opinions clearly and backed them up with specific examples. Now just let it roll off your shoulders. Sooner or later he'll perform again or release another tune that you'll enjoy and sure as shootin' someone will be on here trying to tell you you're crazy for liking it.

...and the wheels on the bus go round and round....
