Prince & repetivity

One of the reasons those who truly love Prince have become "bored" at times, is because of his tendency to repeat forms of music. For example, is there not a strong similarity between "the work, pt. 1" and "musicology" and then again "sexy mf?" Then again, is 1+1+1=3 not very similar to "erotic city?"

There is not one answer, but could it be that Prince's creative juices are on hold, or is his possible refusal to allow others to produce him the indirect cause for apparent repetitions? Viewing other org comments, it seems as if many feel the same. What about U? wink

Co-sign wink

And you know what - sometimes I think - knowing how Prince recycles from his vault - that they actually were recorded at the same time (just kidding)

you are right. but this is normal.
every artist has a repertoire of musical building blocks which he uses to build songs. its normal way of creativity to use the same blocks on different ideas of songs.

personally i wouldve expected far more repetitivity considering the masses of songs he wrote. in fact, there are lots of building blocks in princes music which you can find here and there, because in the end, even princes musical output comes from his "hearing-experience" which is the base of every musical artists output.

prince doesnt re-invent the music. nobody does. hes "just" a master of melting different styles, using his favourite musical building blocks he aquired by hearing and making music, turning it all into his own style, which we all love.

He has said many times that he borrows from himself QUITE A LOT.

BTW-- is there such a word as REPETIVITY?.

I think your thinking of the word "repetition"

come on give the man a break, what like over thirty albums, it would be very hard to make very song not remind you of the other..

i think he has done quite well, not being too repeative with the catalogue of music he has created.

Should all his songs sound absolutely different to each other? C'mon, Prince is one of the most diverse songwriters ever.

I mean go download some Propellerhead Rebirth songfiles and see if they appear repetitive for you.

If you will, so will I

I've always thought most songs of Prince's are based on the same beat as 1999. A four-on-the-floor kick drum and an almost equally heavy snare...vary the tempo and you have instant Prince.

First off, there's only 12 notes.

2nd-through-fourbillinth-thrillionth, there are only so many ways you can put them together.

From start to finish, if we can have 100 really-very different songs from him, that's enough.

If you're all thinking about the facts that "Alphabet St." has a hook from "Just As Long As We're Together," and that "Lemon Crush" uses the ending synth line form "When Doves Cry" (or any other examples that i could go on and on and on with), then please keep bitchin', cuz no human is ever gonna give u as much music as this man in his living presence or posthumos legend.

(did i really say that out loud?)

I've heard the "Housequake" beat used a few other times in "2 Nigs United for West Compton," and "Jughead."

Also, "Thunder" sounds similar to "When Doves Cry."

how about i just got the batman soundtrack- (I ordered it online for about the price of a cd single)

I swear the first 5 seconds of partyman and the first 5 of 1999 are just about i-damn-dentical.

I think he took that extra snare out and bam-- there was a new king in town.

king.

Actually, this was done completely on purpose. They were shooting the movie with Prince songs Jack N. liked and 1999 was being used for some of the joker scenes. Prince "re-did" 1999 as Partyman...
