What is it with all the SHOUTING on here today? But to reply to your question, I too listen to his earlier stuff more (Dirty Mind - Lovesexy), with Parade being a particular fave. I do listen to the nineties material now and again just to vary things, but it doesn't give me nearly as much pleasure. However,I never listen to Rave, whereas I listen to TRC as much as the eighties albums.

My personal favorite album is Sign O' The Times, but I recently took it upon myself to construct a super album of 36 of the best songs he recorded in that area over the evolution of the album from Dream Factory to Camille to Crystal Ball to Sign O' The Times (ie an aggregate/box set to represent if he'd had the incling to record an album like Emancipation during his prime year), and THAT album is probably my favorite.

I listen to the newer stuff almost exclusively, though I do go back as far as 1986 occasionally. I just have heard the older stuff more and don't need to listen to it at the moment. Soon I'll rediscover it.
You're definitely right about the energy, though. It's like two different musicians. The rock star goes through Purple Rain, and the artist takes over after that. The early stuff will never be equalled by Prince in terms of cool fun daring energetic pop records to listen to with your friends. The later stuff has a complexity that the early stuff doesn't, however. Check this song out at:

The 1st album i heard was Purple Rain, then Batman - then Diamonds & pearls, then everything from there. Then i went back 2 the beginning and started from For You..... to me its like every album (or 2) is an evolution from the previous album. i have different favourites almost every week..... but i can still put down the following as stand outs
(in no particular order) Gold Experience DIrty Mind Come Symbol The Rainbow Children..... ..... ah who am i kidding.... they are all good albums in their own way

ok does anyone go back and listen to them in order? I mean feel the growth as an artist? I used to do that every year while waiting for new stuff.
1. Lovesexy--still my fave after all these years 2. 1999 3. sign o the times 4. controversy 5. Prince We all should know that diversity makes for a rich tapestry, and we must understand that all the threads of the tapestry are equal in value no matter what their color. Maya Angelou

is this the album?? by the way, I stared at your screen name for a solid 2 minutes thinking "this bed is cream? that sounds werid" I know, Im slow Symbolic Beginnings was a 94 East release. Mainly demos of songs recorded before the album For U. Prince is featured on the cover, but is not the leader of the group. There are some wicked jams on it tho. Just Another Sucker is playing now! BTW.... In This Bed Scream is what I meant by my nickname. U know what a wrecka sto is? If U wanted 2 buy a Sam Cooke abum.... Where would U go? _________________________________________
