Prince's New Manager =You

You, for some strange hypothetical reason, have just been named Prince's new manager. What advice would you give him?
MINE:
1 Put out a boxset of the best of the unreleased stuff from the vault, let the fans decide what will be on it via web poll.
2. get started on slammin' new CD yesterday, if not sooner.
3. 2005 tour setlist selected via webpoll, small halls admittance granted only by passing a quiz of trivia, the better your score the closer your seat.
Anyone else.
If you wanna get higher, ya gotta get DEEP!

the one and only thing i'd advise on: the music club = less on the merchandise and trivialities, more on the music. other than that he's fine.

thumbs up!

Although I will give him credit for a pretty active music club for most of 2004 with the virtual b-sides and other new downloads. The last few months have been dead in the music department. I'm hoping that the crummy merchandise that keeps getting restocked and promoted is just for filler 'til he's ready to drop some new tunes.

Agreed. I'd ensure the music club has one outtake per month for the diehard fans to download.
I'd arrange a deal with Warners 2 remaster his old albums and release a DVD anthology that contains ALL the videos.
Next i'd release the acoustic cd in a package with the musicology live dvd.

Then i'd tell the little fucker 2 stop going 2 award shows and start working on that new cd.
I just can't believe all the things people say !

1) Do not listen to the fans where the release of "new" music is concerned. There is no way you could possibly please everybody.

2) Do not do a reunion tour with the Revolution unless you are so hard up for cash that it's your last resort.

3) Music club: offer live concert cd's. Uncut, and uncensored. Start from 1980 or so and pick shows from his archive of tapes with the best sound quality. Package them in a simple sleeve with the set list, date of the concert and names of band members. Keep it simple. Continue to distribute through Music Today or a similar company. No downloads.

1) IGNORE any advice regarding release of tunes, set lists, or nasty vs non-nasty lyrics from any fans, especially from the fans at Prince.org.
2) In fact, ignore the fans at Prince.org completely.
3) Get a new record ready to drop, along with a corresponding tour which is based around the new record.
4) Stop with the greatest hits-type set lists and drop (for real) as many hits from the set list as possible. Concentrate mostly on new material and rarely performed tracks.
5) Stop with the music clubs and the preferential treatment for the members that goes along with it. Your goal is to be as non-exclusive as possible.
6) Remember that inner "artist" voice? Locate it, and listen to it exclusively. Think not of radio, charts, ticket sales, fans or any of that crap.
7) Talk not of your extensive vaults and how much Warners held you back unless you plan to do something about it, a la John Frusciante (who after publicly stating that he had a shitload of material he wanted out there found out a way to release seven records in the course of a year).
8) Guitar, guitar, guitar...

which would, in fact, include you (you're here, right?). at any rate, to x out one set of fans would be absolutely trivial to the entire suggestion process; it's almost like asking things from, say, walt disney fans--but hold up! don't ask the donald duck fans, for they know nought.

a prince fan is a prince fan, no matter where their fansite of choice is. come off of it. neutral

Point A) Right, except I'm playing the part of Prince's new manager, not myself. Pay attention to the thread!

Point B) The fans that come here (Prince.org), including myself, are a different breed than the fans that don't. I know many of them, and this is my opinion on the subject. My opinion, worth exactly not much at all, but still...

Come on, don't be so defensive about this board because you are a moderator, people around here are crazy!!

Wasn't that the ONA tour?

U know who we're talking about here, right?

"Crystal Ball"? (My mentioning of this is not 2 discuss the merits of that release in terms of 'The Vault' and what could have gone on it VS. what wound up on it, but it was WAY better than nothing)

If I were named Prince's new manager today...I would sit down and talk with him about what he'd like to do this year, firstly!

See what the man has on his mind, what direction he's looking to choose musically or even on the business side of things as a whole.

I'd suggest an album be released in the summer...preferably Tuesday; June 7, 2005!

His Birthday lol
Also, I'd suggest the album be more experimental w/ tons of guitar.
Give us that signature Prince sound w/ screams and moans!

Special Guest Collaborations would be to a minimum, perhaps calling up Wendy, Lisa, Joni Mitchell & Ani Difranco for a wicked acoustic jam.

I'd have him call up John Blackwell to Beat The Life out of some drums for one mo' time!!! w/ Rhonda pluckin the funk out of her bass on a groove thats just out of control and of course Prince on his Electric Blue Angel!

We also gotta get Prince and Gwen on some crazy 'Ska/Punk' song together; reminding us of the "Jack U Off, Sexuality & Gotta Stop" Days!!!

I'd have 'Prince' Premiere the first single on his very own Primetime Network T.V. Special this upcoming spring season...which would feature highlighted clips from the biggest selling concert tour of 2004 & An NpgMusicClub Members Q&A session!

Prince would also release the DVD soon after and launch a full promotional campaign in support of the new album.

He'd also Open the 2005 Mtv Video Music Awards with a 10 minute performance.

and then I woke up (LOL)

I'd personally like to know what songs you guys are talking about all the time. If the new manager could persuade him to release these bootlegs and outtakes and whatever, then that'd be cool.
Don't hurt me, I'm a newb. I'm supposed to be stupid.
