Artists (Prince, Quincy Jones, James Brown, Kraftwerk, Queen, The Beatles, Ray Charles, Sly Stone, etc.) are geniuses because: 1) They were the ones to do somethings with music theory that were never thought of before & their fans love/respect them for it. 2) And it's the people who decide which artists are the geniuses, not the artists themselves!

I'm sorry - I just can't see Prince getting influenced by Brighter Death Now or Merzbow, and also anything worthwhile coming out of it. He really should be influenced by his peers, like Kylie. I'm serious.

Aside from a couple, those examples really do not a genius show in my opinion... On the other hand, TRC (the song), cool as the otherside..., The Love we make, Empty Room, The Dark (album version), Papa, (trying to think of something from musicology), Mad Sex, Strange But True, High, Xenophobia, Gold, P Control, (still trying to think of something from musicology), Days of Wild... However, unlike the 80's it is hard to single out whole albums as genius these days...

I agree. However, in the 80's many many many of Prince's albums were not looked upon as genius. Around the World in a Day, Parade, even Sign O' the Times had a lot of crappy/so-so reviews from critics. Only upon retrospection have these albums been viewed as being "works of Genius". "New Power slide...."
