There was a time when Prince seemed to be about to do something which would change the direction of Pop Music forever (a category to which he must belong due to his general blending of 'popular music styles') - after SOT, after Lovesexy, he seemed to be on course to produce a Massive Innovation (like the General Theory Of Relativity in music terms) Then suddenly, too suddenly, he lost his way. He took a backward step with Graffiti Bridge. Then another with Batman which sounds at times like him trying to make Lovesexy more 'rocky'. Suddenly he is self cannabalizing, mining ideas he has already had instead of plunging headlong in to the abyss. Everything since sounds like a rehash of somebody elses idea - queenlike operatic rock of The Symbol album, to poppy mainstream jazz of TRC. It is just not good enough for someone who wishes to be perceived as a Genius. He ceased to create the new, just to rehash the old.
He was on the edge of being a Genius, now he is just in the foothills of mediocrity

Prince IS a genius. Noone can deny that. Anyone who can play as many instruments as he does and write the songs that he has cannot be considered anything but. If it hadn't been decided before that point in time, when Prince omitted the bass line in When Doves Cry he officially became a genius. That being said, yes the man has watered down the quality over the years. Part of that is because he burned so brightly early on, I believe, didn't give himself as many directions to go in because he had already accomplished so much so early. And the man can't market worth crap, even though it seems like he has learned something over the last couple of years about self-promotion (the man thing was just to expose himself to the masses and they would come to him---they just had to know that he wanted him.) You cannot lose genius, so establishing the man's musical intellect let me give you my theory of why I get disappointed in the man from time to time.

Prince is like my Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting. I know what he can do. I know just how good he is when he pours his heart into a project and I know that he has unlimited potential. But sometimes I have been like the Ben Affleck character, wondering why the man was slumming around when he could have been soaring. As I said in another thread I had about diappointments in Prince's career, there is no reason or excuse that any Prince album should go less than Platinum and certainly not less than Gold. But when P. brings his C game instead of his A game, can I blame the crowd for not showing up? The end of Good Will, when Affleck goes to Damon' house and he is not there (in not so many words, Damon got off his ass and went and did something); that is how I feel when in Prince succeeds. That sense of pride knowing my mediocre ass could never accomplish anything close to the levels of success Prince can reach but that I'm backing a winning horse, someone who is worthy of the time I have spent defending and following and enjoying.

Prince is and always will be a genius...but he will often disappoint because we know just how much he is capable of.

People sometimes under value what I think 'Genius' means - to me it means that you shape future directions taked by other people in the future. If you like, you legislate for the future direction of music. To me Prince has not achieved that. But he may still be able to .

Wow, sos. Who's being an ass?

The guy comes on with a valid question, sure, although he's clearly trying to bait people one way or the other, and so far we haven't had anyone name-calling, or saying "you're stupid if you don't think Prince is the most genius of all geniuses!" etc. Why are you jumping in and calling people asses?

The definition of genius is to have extraspecial intellectual or artistic abilities. There are plenty of geniuses that nobody will never know about. Miles davis in his book talks about the most amazing pianist he has ever listened to who died at the age of 25 in a bar in a shithole. Do you know the guy's name ?

NO...But for Miles Davis he was an absolute genius.

Now regarding prince's influence over music...uhm You should listen to Outkast, Gwen Stefani, Alicia Keys...I mean mostly all the artists who matter today...They do not even try to deny prince's influence.

Yes Prince is incredibly gifted noone will dispute that but when people, if they do, listed to his music in the future, it will be down to the quality of the compositions, the freshness, the inspirational and creativity of them

I put up the first photoshop picture. I was poking fun, and if that's being an ass, so be it.

The topic is worded very strongly, in a way designed to get attention from fans, most of whom regard Prince as a genius. Devilstwin then says he's merely asking a question, but the thread title is "Prince has lost the right to be called a genius." That's a strong statement, and you have to expect strong reactions.

I don't think any of those reactions have justified saying we're behaving like asses.

A coupla reasons, D. The first being I'm smitten with the visual oxymoron it conveys so cheekily, such as a picture of Muhammed wearing lipstick and a feather boa. The second being, I'm very lazy.

Anyway, you'd both be banned nowif I was a mod. Keep your beef to orgnotes in the future. smile
