You're right most casual fans won't list a song off of "Musicology" as one of their favorite Prince songs. That has nothing to do with how good the album is. I mean, most casual David Bowie fans won't list anything off of his latest as their favorites either. That's why casual fans are treated with some distain among hardcore fans. Most Prince fans might not list any "Musicology" songs as their favorites---does this mean they didn't like the album? No. Does it mean they hate it as much as you? No. Start a thread asking people for their favorite 20 Prince songs and see what they list. Why would I do that here? This is a Prince fan site full of hard core Prince fans. Some people here think Musicology is as good as Lovesexy. What I am talking about is the fact that you are constantly bashing Prince (post 1995) but you don't talk about why you don't like his music other than that it doesn't do anything for you. Then you haven't been paying attention. I've given many detailed explanations as to why I don't like what he does. Maybe you just missed them all or don't want to see them. You want him to go back to "his roots" and "get his shit together". 1+1+1=3 IS the MPLS sound, ie "his roots", yet you joke about he must have been doing crack when he made it because you don't like it. I don't think a single track on that shit album sounds like anything from the good ol days. So what are you talking about? No he shouldn't be doing drugs just becaus eyou don't like his music. Well I still think it's a good idea and I'm sticking to that. "You need people like me so you can point your fuckin' fingers and say, "That's the bad guy." "

Some of the best music has definately been made by people that were on drugs. I remember in 1985, when Rick James told the press he was off of drugs (probably only for the moment ) and he released the album "Glow". People everywhere were hollering....."Somebody, please get this man some drugs!!!!"
As far as Prince goes, I've often wondered if he actually did experiment in the earlier days. I realize we're joking here and this post is not to be taken seriously, but hell, drugs probably might get Prince out of this hole he's been in for years. Of course new songs played on the tour, he was still trying to promote a new album while still drawing in a crowd by promising them hits. With any older artist, not just Prince, it's good to play a new song or two so people can go to the restroom and go outside and take a cigarette break. The "One Night Alone" tour was also played in auditoriums rather than coliseums and just because everyone does not prefer Prince's newer work does not make them a casual fan or the general public. These are the people that got him to the point that he could afford to release bullshit and get away with it. Then you point out that what Prince fans consider "hits" and what the general public considers "hits" are two different things but earlier in your post, you praise Prince for winning a Grammy. I made a similar observation not so long ago at HQ - not sure if drugs are the answer, but P definitely needs some kind of demons to fight to start his creative juices flowing again. He's too bloody content by half - spiritually and emotionally, and it's BORING! His last great creative phase was 93-95 when he was wrangling with WB - no idea if he partook of any recreational pharmaceuticals during this period, but his troubles helped him make great music. Before that it was Black/Lovesexy period when it's rumoured of he was experimenting with Ecstacy, and that seemed to work out fine!
He's going into middle age all fluffy and happy and content to rest on his laurels and emulate his musical heros rather than be groundbreaking and forge a musical legacy. Great artists need some angst to fuel the creative drive, and he no longer has that. All orgnotes and emails requesting trades or how to acquire bootleggage will be ignored. - The ThreadKiller -

really? well "LSD, shrooms, datura, morning glory, good absinthe" are all classified as just as hard, if not more (specially shrooms and LSD), depending on the person. it doesn't matter that they're not addictive - they can have lasting psychological effects in some people. and Prince is not just some regular guy, he's got his antennae stuck out there already just like any good musician. drugs and talent in the end are usually a BAD combination for sensitive artist types. i'm sure he's toked on a joint a few times though in the past, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad to responsibly use something softer like that sometime. in the end though, drugs are just a shortcut...even though they could revive something in him that even a musicology lover like myself admits has been lacking at times, it's what's happening in the guy's LIFE that really matters and affects his art the most. . Great thread and some great comments!
Personally, I'd love to hear a Prince album inspired by an LSD/mushroom experience - it would be totally off the wall and astonishing, I suspect. I also beleive that he has experimented (or,rather, dabbled) in the past and I think you can hear that sometimes in his music. I've listened to lots of him music whilst, shall we say, inspired by one chemical or another and there are some tunes where you hear such detail and references that you think he must have been out of it when making that! All the best music I listen to was created by known drug-users - I don't believe its a short-cut (as someone here suggested), just a new door with a new path behind it. ...we have only scratched the surface of what the mind can do...

Not only is it inacurate and uninforfomed. It is totally irisponsible!!!!! Do you realize that there are impressionable, unexperience kids on this website!!! Even many who are open to recreational, or monitored drug experimentation realise that there are deadly risk with this and minors should not be expossed to it. Why would you throw this out like drugs are candy or something? This is not the place for this type of discussion. There are adult sites for discussing somethinmg like this. Lets take a look at the artist who have experimented with drug use and where its taken them! Elvis addicted to "Prescription drugs" - Embassessing pot belly - Depression - Death! Jimi Hendrix - Couldn't manage his career or money - Poor live performances -Death (He made more money after his death, then when he was alive.) Louis Armstrong - OD Charlie Parker - OD Billy Holiday - OD How about bands who desentigrated becasue of drugs? Nirvana Van Halen Motley Crue The Doors Led Zepplin Do I need to go further? Someone help me remember some more. Lets list everyone we know who ruined their career or OD'd beacause of drugs!

I am not a drug user, and I don't condone drug use. HOWEVER, it is an undeniable fact that using intoxication as a form of artistic inspiration has been a part of human history since civilization began. Drugs do not produce creativity, but sometimes they can help elicit it. Granted, it irritates the hell out of me whenever people automatically attribute any weird or creative ideas to drug use and when they say shit like it "opens your mind", but there are a number of creative genius' who have been drug users. Now to say the drugs are responsible for the creativity is absolutely false (think of the reverse correlation ie think of how many junkies and stoners there are who couldn't produce a good idea if their lives depended on it), but with some people, it has helped them evoke their latent creativity and overcome their inhibitions. It's also just an unfortunate fact that, drug users or not, many creative geniuses are also disturbed in some way or another and lead hard or depressing lives.
Now in regards to prince, I am actually curious to know what his drug history has been but from my understanding he was more of a dabbler and it would be completely assinine to ascribe his artistic accomplishments to drugs. For one thing there are plenty of prince's greatest inspiration who never used drugs like stevie wonder, duke ellington, and rock's greatest iconoclast of all, who had more freakish creativity in his finger than any ten drug casualty rockstars you could name off the top of your head: frank zappa. Drugs are kind of like creativity steroids, they may help you get there faster, but the risks often far outway that benefit and you could get there without much more healthily.
