Ali vs. Foreman...Clay vs. Ruben...Bush vs. Gore...Yankees vs. Red Sox...Godzilla vs. Mothra...this battle has to be up there with those. I'm literally sweating profusely as I mull over the choice. But, as I calm my erratic breathing and astral project through my brain, it becomes clear which song has had a bigger impact on me. The song that, when the first time I heard it on the radio, I couldn't believe I was hearing it on the radio. It was so stark, so real, so affecting. It was a year out from the Challenger exploding and P was singing about it as another link in a chain of brutal events that we become subjected to on a day to day basis. A chain we had almost become numb to. The man was singing about crack and AIDS which, up to that time, almost no one had been brave enough to approach. The drum beat was downright hypnotic and forces you to bob your head to what is one of the bleakest damn songs of all time. But Prince gives us redemption at the end...the cure to the blues, the way to keep moving. Find someone to love and perhaps, if you have a child, Nate is a nice name. How in the HELL this was not song and record of the year I will never know!
Girlfriend is classic too because no one has ever really captured the weirdness and complexity and confusion of gender roles better in a song. But it didn't touch me in the same way. Both are like paintings in a Princely museum. I look at Girlfriend and I appreciate the artistry, its craftsmanship, its bravery, with dry unemotional eyes. I look at Sign and every damn time the song hits me in the gut. Those of you who are in your early 20's and do not remember it on the radio, you just cannot understand how fresh and new this song was at the time. And to this day, it is still timely, maybe now more than over. My vote goes for: Sign O The Times All good things they say never last...

Two of his very best songs, IMHO! Both of them lyrically and musically interesting and challenging, and both of which still stand up today. It's a close call, and I'd be happy to see either of them win, but I think I'm gonna go with.....
IF I WAS YOUR GIRLFRIEND I like P's work on the few occasions where he lifts the veil and lets us see him vulnerable. This is the sort of song that I think only he can really pull off - and, in doing so, he tells us something interesting about masculinity, loneliness, the desire for intimacy, etc, from a unique perspective. (Although, he does start to ramble a bit at the end..... but, hey, don't we all.....!) "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

Because of his new live, funky version of SOTT, I'ma have to go with this. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

IIWYG to win. Don't worry, I can't get pregnant - my ovaries are diseased......

DAMN! This is not easy. How could picking a song be so freakin difficult? Why!, Why!, Why!,
Gotta go with If I Was Your Girl Friend [Edited 2/23/05 11:06am]

Sign O' the Times, based on seeing it performed live at HOB Vegas last year. Can I kiss you there, down there where it counts?

First of all, thanks to The Org for voting off Dorothy Parker instead of SOTT.
That said, my vote must go to one of his most amazing pop songs ever, a song that again and again reminds me of his irresistably charming genius-Sign 'O' The Times The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

Sign of the times [Edited 2/23/05 11:09am] Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

I'm still mad at y'all behind "Adore."
But I digress. I vote to ELIMINATE SOTT and to SELECT IIWYG. It is important as the leadoff for the album, and is a classic song in its own right, but IIWYG is the better song, overall. Honestly, I can't believe SOTT survived "Adore" and "BODP." [Edited 2/24/05 8:40am] Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Glad to see that some of us still have taste . Truthfully, these are the two songs that I had thought would be left standing at the end (maybe with Adore as an alternate).
I pick Sign 'o' the Times for the win. The live performances from '87 edge it for me. I'm the first mammal to wear pants.

Alright bitches. I'm back in the mix. I was so upset after y'all fucked up the voting for this album that I took a few rounds off, but I will not be a bystander for the final round. Between these 2, it's gotta be If I was Your Girlfriend that survives. What I'm in dismay is that Sign of the Times" lasted this long. The lyrics are great, but the music??? Are you kidding me? MAybe the reason why this song lasted so long is that it doesn't really have an identity. It's neither here nor there. Meaning, no one's in love with it, but no one minds it. That's my philosophy. But how can a song like this slip throught the cracks, and much more muscially inclined songs such as Adore, ICNTTPOYM, and Dorothy Parker take a back seat?? It just doesn't make sense. Please people, at least get this voting right: If I was Your Girlfriend is better than SOTT, but Adore is still the champion in my book.
-phunk Whatever it is, it´s got to be PHUNKy!!!

-phunk I agree that Adore is easily the most definitive and moving song off SOTT, but I totally disagree with you about ppl not really loving SOTT passionately. I happen to absolutely love it to death, I think it's an amazing pop song with a lot of meaning. Musically, I think it's really unique sounding and addictive in its own simple way. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I absolutely love his recent live versions of the song where he does that blistering guitar solo at the end...but the album version? You really dig the album version? -phunk Whatever it is, it´s got to be PHUNKy!!!
