If it was to happen, I'd lock the bugger in a studio with an awsome array of heavy amps, guitars and some crazy old analogue synths, get the hole lot on a DAT tape and go sample the best bits and make some DJ Shadow/James Lavelle type crazy shit ... hmmm ... I'd get Morris Day in on the project too... him and Syd Barret. Some drugs with heavy guitars, synths, and new players (and Morris Day) and folks we have a winning combination. Prince and a lot of other people on this planet still thinks he is making good music. So, should he start taking drugs just because you aren't moved by his music anymore? No.
Also--some of the shittiest music has come out of drug use. [Edited 2/23/05 14:41pm] "New Power slide...."

Sure, drugs could end up leading to P making awful music, but what is there to lose? He's already released NPS and SNOOZE. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I'm talking about his new music. Actually, I think bad albums like NPS and SNOOZE helped ppl appreciate his old brilliant hits that much more, and contributed to its overall success. I'm 50/50 here. I wouldn't want 12 versions of The Wedding Feast, but see that happening. But then, I can see the point of view about P having a different state of mind.

if prince had a bad time on ecstasy i would hope that he would not try acid or the harder drugs. i'm sure he's probably toked on a joint or two over the years though....i don't think the man needs it personally. but i tend to agree that some darker material would be great.

[Edited 2/23/05 15:21pm] Regardless his new music won Grammy's. Obviously that is not a definite sign of good music, but it is as close as you can get to a stamp of approval. What artist who has been around 20+ years doesn't play mostly hits on their tours? Prince played plenty of new shit on this tour-and he has done a good number of tours that were "hit free". It's not like ONA tour was chock full of TOP 10 songs or everything he played was from "The Very Best of Prince". What Prince fans consider Prince's "hits" and what the general public considers his "hits" and what the genreral public considers hit "hits" are tow different things. You said "Plenty of people aren't moved by Prince's music. Plenty of people were moved when he busted out each show with "musicology". Forget semantics-people were moved. "New Power slide...."

You're right most casual fans won't list a song off of "Musicology" as one of their favorite Prince songs. That has nothing to do with how good the album is. I mean, most casual David Bowie fans won't list anything off of his latest as their favorites either. That's why casual fans are treated with some distain among hardcore fans. Most Prince fans might not list any "Musicology" songs as their favorites---does this mean they didn't like the album? No. Does it mean they hate it as much as you? No. Start a thread asking people for their favorite 20 Prince songs and see what they list. What I am talking about is the fact that you are constantly bashing Prince (post 1995) but you don't talk about why you don't like his music other than that it doesn't do anything for you. You want him to go back to "his roots" and "get his shit together". 1+1+1=3 IS the MPLS sound, ie "his roots", yet you joke about he must have been doing crack when he made it because you don't like it. So what are you talking about? No he shouldn't be doing drugs just becaus eyou don't like his music. [Edited 2/23/05 17:39pm] [Edited 2/23/05 20:02pm] "New Power slide...."

See D'Angelo for your answer. We'd get a mediocre album every ten years. In other words prince wouldn't have a career.
Or to make it more plain: see Sly Stone, Rick James, Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Scott Weiland, John Frusciante, and on and on. And yes I did include people who are not yet dead but have been damn close. . [Edited 2/23/05 19:54pm] ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
