The name change and slave & record company problems

I never followed Prince's career until MUSICOLOGY so I don't know a lot of these things so...
What was the deal with him changing his name into a symbol?
And why did he write slave on his face?
What were the problems with him and his record company? I don't understand why there would be any problems with such a successful artist.

also two before me isn't considered longer than me...Learn to capitalize the letters too
