What If God Was One of Us

Prince isn't exactly famous for doing justice to covers. Sure, there have been exceptions, but for the most part his cover versions have been a bit blah at best.

Except this one, I think. Joan Osbourne's version is alright, but there's no energy, no emotion to it. Prince YELLS his version out; manages to make his version sound more spiritual IMO.

What's everyones opinion of this?

Also -was it recorded live? It has that imperfect "concert" sound to it. hmmm

I do dig it quite alot actually. Never got round to hearing it much though (that was a major problem with "emancipation"...so many tracks etc)

I love the sword sound effects and the hokey keyboard (u know it sounds all heavenly).....

Everytime I hear his version, I want to rip off all my clothes run up on stage and rub slap him with my dingus.

I can't say enough about this track. It's magnificent. It has a demo quality to it that makes it seem as if he was happy with the song in it's earliest stages. Rare with Prince in the '90's.

Don't like it, but then, I never liked the original either.

Love the way he sings the verses but the belted chorus doesn't do it for me. He loses the melody which is taken over by one of the instrumental parts. The original is cool.

Great guitar, and better than the original. But then, the original wasn't that great a song, so where does that leave us?

Did you all know that the song was written by the guy from the "Hooters"? You all remember them? "Holy Moses Climbed the Mountain..." Christian mullet heaven!

It's a great version of the song. I can do without the rest of his covers. This is the only one he actually improves on the original.

Question

Love this song. Prince put his signature on this and his guitar
playing was masterful.

He did a better job on this cover. Much more feeling.

GOD is 1 of us nod
